Done about 40 miles of running so far this week all seems to be going well.

I've not had any experience with the gearboxes but both whine when you take them out of gear as the shafts slow down. It's not loud to notice when the revs are at 1k.

Both boxes are full with atf and don't make grinding noises and work fine.

They are velvet drives. Anyone know if this is normal as I can't find anything online about them doing this.

I guess it could also be the support bearings or even the deep sea seals making the noise but I can't drive it and be in the engine bay to check for sure

We often swap the ATF for 15w40 on transmissions that make odd noises , velvet drive are a transmission that will happily work with various oils.
We have various makes of transmissions installed in the boats we see , ZF, Velvet Drive and PCM being the most popular.
But you are correct that the noise is generated by the propellers continuing to turn as the boat slows.

Awesome so I should stop worrying about it?

I can only describe the noise like a whistling kettle boiling.

I noticed today that it starts when both engines are running, between locks I run on just 1 engine and as soon as I switch off the port engine I can hear the starboard making the noise. If I then drop the starboard engine into neutral it slows and stops when the shaft stops then put the starboard engine back in gear it doesn't make the noise again until both engines are running again.

Hmm, that’s interesting, so it’s only on the one motor/trans.
if you start and run only on the starboard one , what happens then ?

Both appear to be making the noise, I'll do the same testing tomorrow but turning off the starboard engine and running on the port.

I've not tried setting off on one engine as I've been using both to get away from the Dock or locks then go down to 1 for normal cruising.

Get some one else to drive so you can listen and pin point the noise. If chugging along on one engine, stick the stopped one in gear, stop it free wheeling.

If I leave the Dock on 1 engine no whistling noises at all.

If I leave on 2 then drop revs to turn one off there is the whine. Drop the engine in neutral till the whine goes away then in in gear and revs and no whining.

I can't really see or understand why running 2 would make anything whine.

Load change on thrust bearings perhaps!

Bit of winter work, the diesel in her was bad, really bad and I knew the tank was going to be a state.

I've drained out the 110l of diesel and got the tank access panel open today.

Any ideas on an easy way of removing that sludge? I was thinking of a scraper and scooping it out.

Equates to 425l so I'm definitely not filling that up to the brim

Steam cleaner/pressure washer and sump pump or wet n dry vac.

scrape out what you can then a steam cleaner and a pump.... how big is the drain valve/pipe?


hot water/steam should shift it pretty quick

Looks like you are having corrosion problems on inside of tank
Only way to fix that is to fill tank completely
Which is not practical as you say
