Yesterday spending some time on my Migatronic.
Filter caps worn but the most pita is to replace the bypass contactor.
It is inside the ac master module and needs a fully disassemble.
And it is print mounted.
What a mess.

This saw was in a sorry state.
Rust, split handle,bent frame and striped threads.

The rust was removed withwire wool and citric acid.
The handle was hot glued and clamped. The screws were binned and the parts bin raided.

Frame was sealed with hot wax. The handle was sealed with oil and abuffing up.

Got this bit of history the other day.
Ex WS sliding bevel.
It is stamped RN and 1942. There is more, but it looks like it was striked out at some point.

Meths, a cabinet scraper and wire wool is used to remove years of dirt and grime.

The brass pivet fixings is an odd size. So it will remain untill I get to Yeovil and buy a new brass fixing.

About 5% of the dirt from the slot. I made a scraper to fit into the slot.

Finished with warm oil and wax.

This di not need much work.

The rust was stabilized and a soft wax applied to the tin.

The Ractchett was striped and lubicated.

Well only a few jobs done yesterday, with meetings, helping, avoiding the press peaple.
But a few jobs were completed.

This little bit of fun was stiff to slide. When I got it home, the thumb button fell off.

Button re-fixed. I cheated. I used a clear 2 pack glue. The rest was polished up with 0000 grdae wire wool.
The stiffness was the slide being bent and a build up of dirt in the runners.
A simple tool was made to clean them out. The bend was removed by clammping it to some oak and dressing the bend out with a rubber mallet.

All done.

It joins the rest.

A bit of time was seeing how much work this little engine needs.

It fires up, it runs.
New seals on the saftey valve, or a new one.
The boiler is caked with lime scale.
The repaired steam pipe needs a bit more care, but it is steam tight.
When in full steam the base plate can be seen to flex. The crack is going to need a carefull repair.

This may be junked.
Every seam leaks, so draws extra air and you get incontrollable flames, as can be seen.

Irritating seatbelt warning on my A3. Starts randomly chiming away saying its not plugged in for a few seconds every now and then. Does it load more when the wife drives.

Dug out my copy of VCDS and cable and turned the chime off.

A simple change of a 4 to a 0 in the intrument coding.

I have no idea actually. With 350 horsepower on tap I doubt I could tell the difference myself.

I’ve put the one it came with back on, may try to flog the other one off.

Last night I had a couple of beers and slipped out into the workshop to mock up the basic layout for the trike. Just need a few feet of tube, some wheels, front forks, and she’s a runner.

Had a mad five minutes on chainsaws, ms880 fried a piston cutting big sticks so it was new barrel , piston and bar/chain as a good measure.

Yesterday was a bit of workout getting the Argo up to the deer that my father had shot on the hill. Wasn't helped by the fact a brake bound and suddenly veered to the left beaching itself on the rock I was specifically trying to avoid .

Anyway decided to have a look at the brakes - who'd have thought they work better with some brake fluid in the master cylinders... Result of a short half mile test drive and was much much better - to the point I'd consider taking a passenger that wasn't dead in the back.

Getting this fitted has taken the best part of 10 years. It's been on the wall a year. Yesterday I decided (that means the same as persuaded btw), that it would be a good day to isolate one leg of the central heating system to connect it up. And it was, except that I had one joint that didn't wet (round the back of the pipe of course), so had to drain down again. Good thing Intook the opportunity to fit the 8mm isolating valves...

Sometimes things just doesn't work out the way one thinks...
Learned that routing a slot with the bit against MDF guide isn't the brightest idea I've come up with

Couldn't find a 3mm straight bit with a bearing guide so I pressed one on the shaft.

A tad better

Just a test to see if a printed drill guide would fit, and it does.

I had a free day at home due to a storm, and instead of ticking off another task box on the "honey-do" list, I hid in my shop and played with some of my toys. I really like antique metal things, and a couple of weeks ago my wife found an old Reading Model 78 apple parer/peeler for me to add to my collection of old and sometimes weird mechanisms. She didn't notice that it had a few broken parts, but I found another similar parer on ebay for a few bucks that had the needed parts. The old Model 78 parer apparently dates from the 1800s, and the "donor" parer appears to be a newer, 20th-century version of the Model 78.

Here's the old parer, as found:

Here's the newer "donor" parer, whose big gear was beyond repair. It selflessly donated a couple of organs to transplant to the old one.

Here's the parer after painting, fabricating a few replacement fasteners, epoxy coating, and reassembly.
NOTE: I restored the parer for display purposes only, but even so, there are no painted parts that would actually come in contact with an apple.
I applied a coating of clear epoxy (FDA compliant for food contact) to the parts (which were bare metal) that would actually touch an apple.

Even though the parer is for display purposes only, I tested it on just one apple to make sure it works.
Eureka! The blades could stand to be a little sharper to smooth out the peel, but otherwise it did a good job of paring and properly ejecting an apple.

Now, back to work on my "real" projects!

I ordered 20 metres of 42 mm steel tube ‘circular hollow section’ from Brundles Monday night, it arrived 10a, this morning.


Now I need design a frame, and to see if my Chinesium bender will actually put nice bends in it.


I could do some sort of Ducati like space frame, all straight sections, but I prefer the olde worlde bent tube look.
