This plane was brought for a friend.
Little did I know, when I handed over the cash it was hidding an issue or 2.

The mouth adjusting screw thread was all bit striped out and the blade was bent.

I struck lucky. A local collage teacher said he would have a go a repairing the thread. It was mounted in a Mill and machined up a size. He then a inserted and it was chilled and the body warmed. It was pressed into place, the tapped to the correct size.

The blade was heated to cherry red, then pressed flat. I then tempered it and polished it up.

Pictures were not taken, for one imple reason.
I didn't have my phone or camera with me.

This pair of scissores were bent, that made them very hard to open.

Drilling out the rivets and bending the frames true.
New rivets were made from nails and cold riveted. The case was treated with leather cream.

Yesterday I had many projects on the go.
This hand vice was just in need of a clean up.

Hot citric acid, then a good dry on a hot pate.
Then a wax/oil mix.

The same oil/wax mix was used on this marking guage. It has showed the Box wood grain a treat.

Heath Robinson called by this morning with his "Rough as a Bear's bum" spray booth so I set to work and made one in all of 30 seconds and put it to good use applying some primer to my lashing shackles:

Don't go with pink. Seems to attract them to being borrowed. I tried that once, thinking no bloke, (bar me), would be seen dead with owt pink.

I suspect it's all down to how they feel they want to identify at the time of stealing them .

The Mondeo developed a clunk. I thought suspension but no it was the exhaust hanger bracket broke off the back box!

Got a stack of these M10 black bolts so I ground the head conical, something akin to the original hanger:

Some MAPP gas and a couple of solid door handles for a former:

New hanger formed and painted, old weld ground out. Nearly ready to weld:

That ingenuity reminds me of a Sunday night many years ago ( 1969 ) when the rubber bearing bush for the clutch pedal cross shaft on my Austin A35 van fell to bits 60 or so miles from barracks . Had a look to see why there was so much wobble/ play on the clutch pedal and drove the rest of the way doing gentle slip changes using the synchromesh gear box alone most of the time .

On th Monday morning as I was repairing an old Bedford RL three tonner I had to change out the upper rh door hinge brass ball with a 1/4 hinge pin hole through it for a new one .

IDEA ! .
I waited till lunch time crawled in under the van as far as I fould get and measured the shaft as well as the hole in the gear box casing that the rubber bush sat in .
Back in the workshop using a 1/4 bolt & nylock nut to grip th brass I held it in the pillar drill and ran a file on it for a few min to get the bass down to the 1/2 " dia size needed for the hole . The evening I tried it , had to take the hole in the brass to 9/64th the next morning , fitted it at lunch time .. I reckon the clutch pedal had never been so good not even when the van was brand new ,

Bit of plastic welding and jubilee clips and Bob's Henrys Uncle!

Welds ground down and sprayed VHT black to hide the embarrassment. (I wonder if you can get grey VHT?) She ain't pretty but she'll hold Captain! I didn't jack the car up, just sort of wedged me and the Parkside diddy 140A inverter under there and did it from the side/below. Ginour helmet.

Incidentally, the red axle stands were given to me. Made by an old chap, ex tank regiment and an incredible engineer. I think these were pallet feet or something from the Bedford plant in Luton, going way back.

Fire blankets, overalls too in this weather!

Borrowed SWMBO's MK1 Fiesta back in the day. The throttle cable went whilst out. I jury rigged the choke cable to the carb. Driving was an exciting test of coordination I can tell you.

They’re stillage feet. I may steal that idea.

If I could weld it would have looked stock! Tbf I could have probably had use of a ramp but with the whole Covid thing I felt it a bit unfair.

Instead, I fed the two sick ones, did a negative test myself...and went to the pub.

4 pints of Scottish Thistle...I think that's what it was called. Strange but very quaffable. Lots of tannins.

CNC Controller died on it last week so I ripped out the old one and a lash up has been made using some development boards I had lying around and a custom PCB to get them back up and running. Bought myself some time to design and build a proper controller.

Lashed together is the right word because the power supplies I had to hand were not powerful enough so was testing using two old car batteries to flick solenoids and contractors. New DIN rail PSUs should be arriving with me today.

Then to sort out the back gauge.

Fixed it again on Friday. One of the contactors (original install) failed which took out a track on my lash up board (2h from starting the design on the computer to fully etched and populated board).

Would have fixed it on Thursday but muppet her after a very long day with a 3 year old interrupting all the time ordered 230V coil contactors instead of 24V ones so had another day's delay for RS to deliver the goods.

This one isn't bad tbh. Bought the brand from the local factors initially to spray the top cover of the oil boiler when I remade that. Sits above a layer of insulation but the fumes or something still eat the steel above away.

This is just a layer of stuck on crud on the underside of the insulation:



Remade top cover. Sadly I need to remake it again! Lasted nothing like the original one from Warmflow. That did since 1998. I remade this in 2015 and it needs redoing now.

I've only ever used "genuine" VHT, but then I'm painting it on the exhaust manifold so that might be out of range. Usually most of it comes off on my fingers as I'm fitting the manifold. The first time was my fault, because I didn't read the instructions so I didn't know the manifold was supposed to be warm when the paint goes on. The others, though, have been applied warm (heat gun warm, that's all I have) and still no good.

I've just sprayed over the welded bit that's painted with VHT, with a good dose of ACF-50. This just to get in the nooks and crannies. God knows what the ACF-50 will do to the paint. Saying that I'm sure the heat will burn the lot off!

My wallet must be water tight then . I have more than two dozen bits of threaded metal like that in all sorts of sizes . For me having a small lathe they also come in handy for turning down into rods & pins etc or studs with a different thread size of form on the other end.
