There is a big home near me that was re-roofed with Chinese slate 10 years ago...slate that bad it needs doing again

Had a look at the Delabole slate pit in Cornwall recently. Whacking great hole in the ground that was producing 120 tons of quality slate a day using 1100 men in the 1840s, now a crew of five are still producing 120 ton a day, but the day I went a single chap was driving a digger and dump truck moving spoil from one side to the other.

Many Cornish grade 1 & 2 rebuilds HAVE to use Delabole slate as a planning condition.

Did a power/speed test on the slate from my roof and it gave interesting results. I saw I should be able to get decent results from a high feed with a lowish power setting but just a white etch rather than black.

Loaded up the image of my bike and set the speed to 240mm/s and power to 30% and ran it. Instead of the 1.5hrs it took just 16min this time and I could have reduced that to 9mins if I had also set the border and text to the same settings.

Here is the result on left, I have also put the previous one on the right for comparison.

It is 335mm x 230mm or if you prefer with a dog for scale. Took about 1.5hrs which is not too bad for one of that size.

If you've got the skills and some time to set things up picture wise, then let it run whilst your working ?

Be a nice set of up to 8 baize backed table mats plus two or three slightly larger mats for hot things on the table . ETYS eat your heart out as people find their wallets & purses .

have you got some sort of fume extraction? whenever we see lasers in factories they take the fume extraction pretty seriously... no idea what vaporized slate/stainless fume is like though?

Wood, paper and leather give off fumes but don't seem to smell anything from the slate, anodised alu or stainless. If I was using it a lot I would think about fume extraction but for now an open window beside it is fine.
It might be different with higher powered lasers of course but this is just a 10w diode laser.

I'd love a slate etched with a laser engraving of my jet boat which was my pride & joy, but at the 20 mph speed limit the delivery would probably arrive after we've moved to another Country. I'll be seriously considering relocation if this govt. insanity persists.
