Believe me it was. This lathe was made in 1943 and delivered to the US army ordnance corps for the war effort. That means it got a 'war finish' which basically meant they rough-ground the lumps off the castings then painted them. That means it was near impossible to scrape the paint off because of all the little lumps and bumps on the castings.
