Today I have made an old Marin bike frame salvageable.

A mate had a rather large off on it and managed to snap the rear wheel dropout.
So a little clean up and a shallow v out. Then run around with the tig at 70 amps both sides means that it should be fairly good as a commuter bike. (Have told him not to jump it as can't guarantee strength etc)

But he is happy as has sentimental reasons.
And ment I could get the tig out for the first time since Christmas really.

Today, among other things done, I made a hole......50mm through 10mm plate using the largest of my Banggood hole-cutter set. It was hard going and took ages, [I have no idea of what grade the steel is, it's 'skip booty' ] with the drill jamming frequently despite light pressure and copious applications of oil. In the end I had to drill through from the other side to complete the cut. Maybe I'm expecting a lot from the poor thing , but the biggest drill have I could use on the lathe is 16mm blacksmith's shank.

Another one to do yet, then I can proceed with Plan A for the hydraulic bench press.

I'll offer a tip for hole sawing - drill a couple of smaller holes inside and tangent to the desired hole for the chips to fall through, I've found it stops the hole saw jamming up.

Not so much today, but finished today.

Record No6 Plane.



How I received it.
In Bits, even the rear handle was in bits. Plus no blade.



All but re-built.
Handle repaired, by letting in a new bit of wood and gluing in a rig.
Replacement blade, not a new one. But a good, but used old one. All I had to do is give it a sharpen and de-burr.



First cut. I have since "tweaked" the blade, frog etc to give a good cut.
Yes, I know the paint is not correct for a Record plane, but it will do me.

A very nice bit of work. Old and a one off.
It worked but was very stiff.



In bits. The treads are the only standard item. The 2 nuts are both different head sizes.
I was later to find out the whole lot has to go back together in precise order or it doesn't work.
So, I gave each part a "ID" stamp to make sure I put it back in the right place.




Cleaned, polished and a light greasing.
The action now is smooth and a "Lovely feel"

I did not polish it up, but polished it as it would been cleaned in one peace.
The future?

Mount it on some nice hard wood and have it as a "Display item"

Been making quite a few bits on the lathe slowly getting to grips with the basics. This is a really simple thing but I use bench dogs a lot on my tables and generally buy aluminium ones from eBay. They are hit and miss with wide tolerances which can create wobble and wear the holes. I decided as I needed some more to make them myself. I made mine to be bang on 25mm with a 19.98mm dog rather than the usual 19.75-19.9 (ish) fit. The fit is rock solid, it amazed me how much that tolerance helped in the MDF hole. This prototype took about 20 mins, the DRO really helped and will be knocking out half a dozen matching ones tomorrow!

I know its simple but I'm finding it satisfying to be able to make precision bits like this on the lathe to your own spec.

Hard to see. But 2 circles of glass.

I know I can get them cut, cheaper than getting a sheet of glass.

But I had the tool and the time.

First attempt broke when tapping it out.
Lessoned learnt and the next 2 attempts I was successful.

Yup. Wouldn't want to be without them now. Perfect job for a capstan banging those dogs out in numbers.
Need to buy myself a jig to make an mft bench top.

Got the hole cut for mounting the ram when my pal cuts the internal threads in the 2 x plates I sent over.



Partly followed @Hopefuldave's tip and drilled 3 x holes inside the circle. Then, instead of following my initial thought of cutting a plywood template to follow with the plasma cutter, I decided on free-hand. Mhhhh, need more practise, but the power file made it more or less acceptable! Onwards & upwards, though.

On the paint front, it was going to be Myford grey when I remembered I have a tine left from the lathe rebuild - then my OCD kicked in and I pulled the trigger on 1/2 litre of New Holland Blue which looks a very close match. I can always lighten or darken it by adding white or black in proportion as appropriate.

Not strictly made today, but tested the mounting dimensions. Pretty happy with how they've turned out.
