Behind the altar at my church they use thin candles to light the bigger candles; recently one of these was blown out but reignited and as they store them on a wooden ledge a small fire broke out. I have been repairing the damage to the wood and filling it in (it's painted so we can hide it really easily) but I decided to make a candle holder so it doesn't happen again. I made provisions for long or short candles to be held (they're about 5mm dia). Used the drill press to make the curved bits then sawed up to them, before filing it all smooth, putting stripper on the steel and sanding it to a bare metal finish. Test hung it on a wall in the workshop, a nice little project on a Sunday evening.
There used to be an ROF around Birtley way years ago, don't know what happened to it though.

A lot are still secured and monitered, some have found use as storage facilities for ammo, others left to rot. Of course, guarding old ROF's fuels the stories of the SSR etc..

It's my friend's birthday in two days time so hot on the heels of my candle holder, I had an idea for something else I could make with steel. These take quite a bit of work but the drill press makes them a ton easier. Lots of filing practice, and then enamel painted. They're for keys or light clothing. One is a toadstool, the other a house sparrow (final coat yet to be applied)

The one at Nottingham that made tank gun barrels definitely is a housing estate; main production was moved to Cumbria over a decade ago although the forging dies are (allegedly
) held by a private company as they're the only ones with big enough hammers to bash 25 feet of gunmetal into shape in one pass.The barrel has a (relatively) fine-pitch thread cut on one end to allow it to be screwed into the breech; you wouldn't want to cross-thread it

I made a start on reinforcing my garage roof joists so I can board it out and put a ceiling and lift ladder in to gain some decent storage. Space which is badly needed as the house has a loft conversion so there isn't much room for camping gear, old kids toys, Christmas decs. all the rubbish you collect as a family.

Yes it was an Abru one with the ladder and the spring kit and door. But I need to replace the ladder with a sliding ally one as I can't unfold the lower section because it fouls my shelves and that's the only place I wanted the door and I'm not loosing the shelf.
