Busy few hours.
Spread over the last 24 hours.
Roofers Axe. As I got it. I new it was in need of TLC.
The shaft was shot, 3 splits. One held together by 3 screws.
De-Rusted. Heated and dipped into Groundnut Oil. Then The cutting edge sharpened and dressed with a oil stone.
Head riveted to a new shaft. I wanted to use brass, but didn't have any to hand. The shaft was dressed back and sanded.
The cheeks have a lot of spring in them.
Oil and waxed, yes that's the ball pein hammer from a few weeks ago. Used the pein over the rivets.
I went for a longer shaft, as the short ones do not feel comfortable in my hands.
Coal Hammer Mk2.
I got this coal hammer, for the simple reason it had a better head. But The shaft was only fit for charcoal conversion.
The head fizzed well in de-rusting and did get a nice dull shine when wired brushed.
Main reason it was not blacked. Hickory shaft was brought locals and sanded well.
Mk1 and Mk2.
As it seamed I was on a role cleaning hammers.
The head was PINTA, it did not de-rust very well. Needed a hard hit with brick acid as it seamed to be coated something.
The Claws needed to be dressed hard and hardened and tempered.
Worth it?
Cost wise, time wise?
No.
Fun wise?
YES!!.
Head was heated and dipped into ground nut oil.
The shaft was oiled and waxed. Head was doubled wedged.

Disassembly of the Electrolux Assistent continued today and I polished the support for the arm. I found that the top cover was some unknown cast metal and painted, not plastic. I am planning to respray it with white 2-component paint. I don't know if you got it in the UK but a finnish company makes 2C spray paint cans that you don't need to puncture a separate hardener for and the spray-can can be used, left and used again like normal 1C paint.

I wonder why the machine isn't grounded, this type of three legged capacitor from what I understand is meant to connect to earth. I wonder if I can replace the cable and plug with a grounded one and earth the metal chassis without affecting the working on the capacitor.
Replacement capacitor has been ordered.

Something I've bean meaning to fabricate for ages; a mount for the tailstock so it doesn't get in the way when I remove it as it gets in the way when bowl turning; the tailstock locks in place too. Plenty sturdy as there's a web under each fork - not clear in the pics.
Haven't been near a TIG torch in a few months so there's some shameful welding and put too much heat into the metal!

Is there something to lock it in place?
It's maga easy to knock stuff of if it's not bolted down. Ask me how I know.
Don't be so sore on your welding it will be absolutely fine for the application.
It"s alway good to aim higher.
At least you show your working out.
I think there are lots on here who would like to but don't because of the fear of negative comments.
We can't all produce well porn, but just look at the standard of some tig welding produced by professionals! Well I think they get paid.

Yup, the lathe bed ('ways' as our 'Murican friends call them) is 16mm thick so I specifically bought some 16mm bright mild square bar so that I can use the tailstock brake to lock it in place once it slides on.

I got this "Thing" the other day, @HughF you recall how bad it handled.
So I did something about it.
I killed it, I cut the head off.
I got a short shaft the other week, trimming it down I made it suitable for the head.
It is originally a French Quarry Hammer, my plan is to harden and temper the head cutting pein and return it to as near as possible to the designed use.
I have a "request" to help clear a small site, were 3 sheds have been.
The "Hammer paint" was striped off, it was thick and it killed a few discs.
The shaft is wood and metal wedged and hot fitted.
It now has a nice feel to it.

Finished my enclosure today. The hinges were "difficult". I bought 50mm ones as I wanted things to be in proportion. What an ar*e of a job, I will get the bigger ones next time I need some as my sausage fingers were burned a few times fiddling with them. Off to the powder coater's tomorrow and then I am nearly ready for a trial run.
Just to re-iterate, only the Jabber Wocky welding is mine, though I did all the fab work. It all lines up too when bolted together, amazing....
Really pleased with the doors because there is plenty of space and access when they are opened because of the pivot points being so far back. It is a great design feature even though I say so myself.

Last night I made a new grate for a cat carrier since we're gonna need it this week, pretty beefy compared to the original.
