Made a nipple. My missus thinks we are just making all this up. She couldn't actually believe that spanners were branded "King Dick". Says it's typical.



It fit fine after I cleaned the threads out:



Then I made a start on a "Titan". Believe it or not, this has a grip safety! Missing the cocking lever, as do most of these, this is a Mark 7:



The little vest pistol is an antique and requires no license, even though it is fully functional.

A pen. It's a bit rubbish as it's my first one and I used a very cheap kit, but lessons learned and I think i can make a good job of the next one.

I thought I was good with my classics when I started with these guys, turns out we get lots of cars in I didn’t know existed and some I’d rsther stayed in the past

I might have guessed at a Sabra for that, but there were a few 'glass car bodies around in the day that all looked very similar.
The Sabre / Sabra did quite well for a while on the less brutal rallying circuits of the day.
In my opinion the Sabre was a better looking car than others that became must better known, yet there's nothing much between them.

This was last night.




My Big WW2 Monitor Brazing Torch had a few issues.

The tank was heavily contaminated with water, from condensation. This meant the heater was also contaminated, so it wouldn't get hot enough.



Not good.

So it was striped down as far as practical, to see if it was worth restoring.



The results.

Not perfect, but good enough to carry on.

I think that it's turned out very good

It doesn't look bad, but it doesn't stand up well to close inspection. However, I've worked out how to solve all of the things I think are wrong with it.

Then waxed until an inch of it's life.

How is it going to grip anything now it's been waxed? Wax is slippery isn't it

Today I made lots and lots of words that the forum won't allow.
I was supposed to be threading some welded steel pipe to make a rudder tube but things didn't go to plan.
First attempt and the thread was almost to depth when the material gummed up and ripped the thread.

Next attempt and the same.

Third attempt and it happened again.

I was about to pack it in but decided to have one last go and all went fine this time.

Not sure why it was happening as the first I was using neat oil and second and third I tried soluble as with the 4th.


Because I now had a short threaded section I will have to weld another bit of pipe to it so I bored out the end 20mm to 20mm depth and will turn down the end of the extension bit and press them together and weld. That is of course assuming they have some pipe left for me to do that

Now that I had the threaded section it meant I could get on with the flange that they supplied, 20mm piece of flame cut steel.

Put it in the 4 jaw, bored it out, threaded then faced both sides.

Then into the Chiron to bore some holes.

They will fix it to a stuffing box.

Tube and flange screwed together but now I will have to go to the workshop tomorrow to finish the job rather than head up to the Cat to get on with it, still swearing.

The second thing that made me happy was that the monarch despite being American and 76years old has a metric screw cutting box.
I cut a accurate 3mm pitch thread using the thread gauge and engaging and dis engaging half nuts and not messing about stopping the motor and re starting in reverse.

This means the elliot concords days are numbered!

Finally got the 1/2" steel plate on to the table frame I made from 60 x 60 x 5mm box. I'll not be winning any awards for its accuracy and squareness and it would undoubtedly wobble on a flat surface (as it does in many places in the garage) but in current position it doesn't budge at all! Am still to decide on a more permanent method of securing it the plate to the frame...

The 1300 x 850mm plate itself is not entirely flat, probably due to me being clumsy in manhandling it. Along the 1300mm length it has a rise of about 3mm about two thirds along, and across the width it has a dip of about 2mm - if that makes sense.

May have a go at straightening it out but not sure whether a blowtorch would provide the heat..

Having said that the brake isn't actually a brake now as I fitted a servo motor to the spindle to do away with the noisy headstock gears so it is just a stop switch now The servo itself brakes pretty fast so it just seems the same.

A friend had a concorde, big spindle bore if I recall but his had noisy spindle bearings and he didn't rate it too highly said the bed was soft.

The concord has a really hard bed but a really soft saddle
The clutches are undersized just like the Colchester mastiff.
The biggest pita is the apron collects coolant and seizes up with rust
But it has full screw cutting range and single dog leadscrew reverse

Maybe that was what he meant, I know he didn't use it much, only when he needed the spindle bore.
He had quite a few manual lathes, Ward and DSG capstans, CVA, small slant bed that I can't recall the name of at the moment but my favourite, and his was the Ikegai, I would have loved that lathe, it had ballscrews instead of leadscrews and was a dream to use.

As per usual as soon as I hit the post button I remembered the name, it was a Wilson slant bed, about the same capacity as a Student.

I have seen one Wilson slant bed in the flesh at a concrete breaker repair shop

They started life as the very Rusty bar just visible at the nearest edge of the tray.

Came along with the other Rusty bits of my lathe.

Only other stock I had remotely close was 60mm and didn't want to waste it reducing to 1"
Turned beautifully once I'd cleaned off the rust and got past the bend.

Took it off Inc the chuck last week to turn some brass for the van door connectors

For no reason I could fathom I couldn't get a nice cut when I put it back on the lathe. Chatter and poor finish so I ended up shoving it down the headstock and cutting them one at a time.
