We are on a slope, so we've gone for piles if im honest this steel work is well over spec'd.

If we had gone for a strip footing we would be looking at about 3m trench

Gotcha, thought it was just a normal footing, I see the clay board now.

Today I made the shutter for casting the cope on my chimney white.
It took me over a week of evenings to make the shutter, because when it's cast I want it to look like brick specials.
I painted it so that it would strip easily and I was worried that shuttering oil would stain the coloured concrete I'm going to use.
Couple of coats of epoxy primer then 2K white.

I was installing the central heating manifold today but didn't realize I needed a special internal tool to tighten up the fittings Bloody Italians!

So out to the workshop and fire up the lathe.
I found a 10mm bolt that was just too bit to big fit in the hole so machines it down a bit then filed the slots with a small needle file.

A couple of nuts to get the spanner on and it's done.

A follow on from last Thursday's post here are couple of photos showing by how much the architect was out and why I had to bolt additional plates onto the main beam.

Not an untidy job done by the chippy in resting the rafter ends on the steel plates I had just intsalled

And this is why you always utilise the safety strap/cord/chain when using a Mag-drill on sloped, angled, vertical and overhead surfaces.

The window installers tripped the main breaker, the mag drill lost power and 30lbs of mag drill fell off the beam.... fortunately I had just stepped down and away to pick up the aerosol of cutting fluid I had dropped moments before.

Again. I supplied the space, the knowlage and the kettle. @Chillitt supplied the items. Mother Nature and Father time supplied the rust.



1964 and 1965 vintage paraffin road lamps. Complete with burners.






The paint was tough stuff, along with the tar. Even 24vDC at 5amps made a dent on the rust. Nor did 60deg C in a caustic bath remove the paint. So it was burnt off and then the bodies were cleaned to remove the metal, make holes with a wire brush.

The state of them led to a few debates on what do they do.
Restore.
Repair.
Stabilize.

In the end a workable compromise was reached.


Were possible a plate was lead soldered on and the holes filled with lead solder and filler used to make smooth.



The tanks were beyond sensible repair. So they had rust converting primer and a coat of silver paint.






The bodies, lenses bezels had 4 coats of Hamerite rust converting primmer. Total tosh. The Halfords one coats better.
Then filler primmer and 3 coats of rattle can top coat. Two different shades, as the original ones were 2 different colours.

We removed a few dents and did a few repairs, but left the ones gave the lamps a certain aged look.

Bit of cutting and welding should keep it going a bit longer.
