I got this Paraffin Road lamp tank.
It came with extra/minus bits.

Holes. Lots off them.

The line of holes goes equally round the 4 sides.. Clearly were the fuel sat on the water.
How to fix it?

Patch it!!
This is a copper hot water heater. It was no good as a heater for a plan I had. So it donated the copper as patches.

Water proof 2 pack filler to hide the terrible repairs and fill any pin prick size holes the sanding will have made.

Will now go with the Green Road lamp.
Not a bad repair.

Was it worth it?
No.
The time to cut, tin solder and tin the body to make it leak proof was more than I could get a new /replacement for.
Would I do it again?
Yes.
The fun of doing it, the fun of using lead/tin solder the seal and fill holes was a good fun. That I think out weighs the cost of the parts.

So today I've made this thing
It's somesort of scaffolding ,the neighbors need this for the olive season that's is actually now
It's made out of some 100x30mm galvanized rectangular tubing 2mm thick
Each leg is 930ish mm long
The orizontal parts are 800mm long
Upper width is 300mm
Lower width is roughly 860mm
Length is 1000mm
Hight is 900mm
Onto this thing will be bolted a piece of wood panel used in construction to give shape to the concrete (I don't really know how call those things we call them "cassero" )
I used my stamos S-MMA 250 IGBT set at 60A for flat joints and 75A for fillets
Using 2.5mm E6013
Versus every prediction I made only few holes
Because was aptemting to understand which was the better technic for the task
So little beads max 20mm long and starting closing the bead on the previous one
If I had already acquired the chop saw probably it was little bit prettier to see and probably the parts fit up was better
Next week I will take the chop saw
Another thing that I recognized when I shortened the parts on the side is that with a plasma cutter the results could be better and safer than do this with a grinder
So I have to buy a plasma cutter but I have to wait until I put some money a part to buy a Chinese unit
So I think that I said all that I done today about this project

It’s a lovely simple design and very strong, how many attachments do you have? One day I would like to paint it all and reinstate the Epco transfer.

i think its only been used once in the 17? years i have owned it
all 3 shelves are full and the top one has a lid
its buried at the min if i ever manage to dig it out ill take some pics

I have never seen another, the lid sounds interesting.

Started on a stack pipe for a Massey 6490 all in stainless.
The inner is 3 1/2" the outer 6".

Just tacked together until the right rods turn up to weld a bit more.

The old end on the bench broke, turned through 180* and melted the top of the cab .
I went to weld it back on, had a look down the pipe and saw lots of daylight. The bottom bits are US as well.
I have patched it up a fair bit over the last few years.

Blending old methods, new methods and TYA methods.



A Foam can, in the style of a old fuel can. I have seen the fuel cans with Pre 1940 board arrow on them. They were used before the British Armed forces adopted the "Jerry Can for fuel. The Foam cans were used to hold Fire fighting Foam on air bases, as far as I can find out.
As you can see it is battered and rusty.
The thing about thin metal and rust is.



This is the worse corner, the paint was stripped using of the shelf paint stripper.
The effect to let in new metal would of destroyed the age and look of the can.



Rust wins.

Using heat to burn the red oxide to black oxide is not a choice as the body is crimped and tin soldered together.

So I hatched a plan.



A mix of lead solder, 2 pack filler and some small copper patches filled in most of the holes. There was no way it could be fully sealed. Using a copper soldering iron to heat up the metal exposed more pin size holes.
It gets to a point when you have to say. "No more!!!"



The old paint was removed, a rust killer applied. The Rattle can paint applied.



Then a bit of fun.

Used some recycled stainless beams (100x100 x 8mm IIRC) to make a heavy duty platform for a new hot water tank in our dairy.
Started this the other day, dragged my Lorch into the tankhouse with cooler, long leads etc, and tried to keep it all clean, worked well... decided last night that it would be easier finishing the welding with the small inverter with air-cooled lift-TIG.
I was wrong It takes more than 30 mins to get used to lift-TIG, and it's rubbish on stainless, since breaking the arc instantly oxidises the weld... suppose people use run-off tabs for this sort of thing, but in general I hated it and found it really hard work, remembering to turn gas on, off, breaking the arc, turning gas off, no slopes, etc. Not the worst looking weld, but some nasty dirty ends.

Next thing to do is going to be converting the valved torch to fit to the Lorch with a button, because I use gear, not talent, to acheive my aims

i use pretty much the same welder for pretty much the same job! either in dairy, fish rooms or fishing boats.. thing ive found to do other than the run off tab is a realy quick snap to stop the ark then back over it with the gas for a couple seconds... ike really fast i can keep going and keep clean for a lot longer doing this

Yeah I tried that... just couldn't get the gas back over the hot weld fast enough. Suppose like anything, you get better with practice
