i made a baffle out 6mo stainless and it was bullet proof no warpage or burning
great material if you can get hold of it d

yes 316 it great to stick weld downhand but needs a skilled welder to do positional work
usualy with a remote in one hand to vary the current

Funny you should say that, the small bit of vertical up I tried didn't go as well.
Was only tacking it up but it was far to hot and undercut badly.

Also had a few pin holes in the welds.
I wasn't being overly fussy and used rods that had been kicking about, but just wonder why it happens on only a few isolated spots?

Pin holes at the start with a new electrode can be common, some brands are bad for it whilst others never suffer from it. I am currently using esab ones and they are perfect.

Fully stocked and the dyke dried up. They did mention snow in the forecast this morning though..

Snow can be warm and acts as an insulator.

Looks like damp electrodes, its at the beginning of the run, as they warm up they dry out a bit and the problem appears to go away, although a macro / micro etch will often show it.
Stainless electrodes can be bought vacuum packed to get round this problem if you are doing anything important.

Don't think it's going to be a problem on this, but it's always good to get an idea of where I'm going wrong if I am welding something fussy (not that that's likely)

Got home today and I needed to chill out and had to relax, today was not a good day.
So home, strong coffee and hide away.

Job 1.
Pocket spanners.


The leather was stiff and a bit mouldy. The spanners did not move.



The leather cleaned and brought back to life with a leather restoring paste.



The spanners were then "blacked" with my kit.

Job 2.
Pifco Fire Fighters Torch.
It was in a poor state, I even thought about giving up on it, it was rusted and busted. But I thought I parted with some money, I could not waste it.


This was the best view of it.



You can see how bad a leaky battery had damaged it. There are a few holes and a lot of rust.
The body was striped and washed in the battery acid cleaner we use at work.



The Lamp controller fell apart, so I riveted back together.




The lamp can only have one bulb working at any one time. but the top one does flash. It is the original bulb and it still worked after all the abuse it got.



The front one gives a nice beam, wide and bright, new bulb was purchased from a decent local hardware shop.



This image shows how bad the plastic lens had "yellowed" over time. This is after I cleaned it hard.
The torch has no plans for it's future, so it will gather dust for a while.

Someone needed to wait until I got back to MIS. They did not wait, and the busted the handle to one of the hand cranked grinders. I did not hold back with my words on what I thought of him.



Due to the nature of the break and how I needed to hold it to repair it I had to "improvise" a clamp.


Finished and cooling.

Just need to find some history on this make of grinder.

Looks a lot like the little "Mole" branded one that dad carried in his service van many moons ago.
It's probably still lying about up at his place somewhere.

Today I made (or more correctly finished) the baffles for the stove I'm fixing.

Made out of 5mm thick 316l stainless, so should last longer than the last mild steel ones.

Stainless is lovely to weld with stick, even for me.

Probably wasn't worth doing but I like a project and it's built in so would have been a pig of a job to replace anyway.

I’ve just welded a new top in my 66 as well, long with baffles. They dont last forever. Thankfully I can repair it.

I've been putting if off since last winter.

Still hacking on the checker plate for the hot rod floor.

I bought a sheet of 5mm plywood yesterday, planning to line the ‘glass bodywork with it, but I abandoned it as I couldn’t get it to curve, or fit properly, and the edges split when being sawed, then a big piece simply cracked in half when I was bending it into place. I shall use some carpet from Woolies-trim.co.uk, glued on for the sides to cover the ugly ‘glass finish.
