I made a little progress with the 'decorative' conch light I'm making.

All finished, tested yet again and delivered to the local cafe/craft shop which takes my stuff in for a small commission. They loved it and I may have got the timing just about right for that "what can we get for them" gift. I also pointed out that it could be used as a night light for young(er) children, being 12V DC driven.

They had sold one of my horseshoe crabs and want at least one more. Into next year I said, fine they said - I suspect my stuff makes a pleasant change from the usual framed pics of local scenes, knitted stuff, etc....



I'll be posting in the "today I acquired" thread in a few minutes - been a busy boy after being at the Surgery in the morning for my usual bloods.

A gate finished today, its to block of an alley at the side of a factory, not designed to be top security more of a visual deterrent to stop dumping of rubbish, or to deter people who sniff noxious powder and stick needles in themselves, It has to be able to be easily opened from the inside so a fire door pushpad does the job.

Personally the state of the alleyway would be enough to keep me out!

Cheers, but I don't 'do' apps, I'm quite happy being local[ish] where folk know how careful I am when doing/making stuff. And as long as my projects are that bit 'different' they get attention.

Needles hold no fear for me, I've had them very regularly for the past c. 12 years or so - since the cancer was first diagnosed. If the treatment timing calls for it, I can give myself the injections at home.

I've even had them in my eyes for laser treatment, you don't feel it because they use anesthetic drops first.

But enough on this boring subject , back to the Collective's talents.

Made a skirting fit a very poorly self leveled floor.made good use of the cheap maquee to keep the torrential rain off too.

This is what I did, E.A.O.E [errors and omissions excepted ]

The main thing is to ensure that the individual LEDs [I used 2 initially to test the level of illumination] don't overheat - contrary to popular belief, in 'one off' builds like this, they can if you feed them too many Amps [?].

I powered mine using an old Nokia phone charger, so 9V DC max - not enough to kill a person so no PAT testing requirement. As I said, soldering has never been a strong point of mine, so the 1mm wires were a bit of a challenge. I had to wire them together to ensure enough even light throughout the shell. Pics don't show it to best advantage, but experimentation will reach a level which pleases you. Mine can be viewed from either side if required.

Also, TEST at every stage, there's no point in assembling it to discover that one flickers etc. I ran them on test for literally hours to ensure that the lamp wasn't going to get even a little bit hot, even to the touch. My pics don't show it, but there's enough of an air gap between the conch shell and the hardwood base.

The rest is up to your imagination. Bases don't' need to be regular rectangles for example - any one which takes your fancy is OK. Similarly, size, shell type, number of LEDs etc - the world is your mollusk of choice....

Got the Aluminium delivered just after 12 so onto the plasma with it and cut out some bits.

I seemed to be getting a lot of soot and the weld was not the most stable. I had noticed this the last day or so I was up at the Cat. Welds were ok but just not as nice as they should be. I checked the gas flow with the peashooter and it was fine, so started messing with inductance, voltage trims etc but still just wasn't right. I then discovered this.

The diffuser must have cracked and broken due to the heat and although I was getting 17LPM flow it was not being diffused correctly and thus giving me the problems.

Welds after that were back to normal although I had to tweak things that I had previously adjusted to get back to where I was happy.

Have as much done as I can today as I will have to go and test fit on the boat tomorrow as I will have to offset the lower section due to the shape of the boat.

Got this small bundle the other day.

A few days in the de rusting tank. The rust was all but gone. Then through the blackening kit.

The hand vice was seized.
The screw was bent and the jaws did not open. But a bit of heat and oil had them in bits.



The punch was sharpened on the inside edge, as they were originally, they have been tried out to cut leather for washers.

Spent a few hours on the lathe this afternoon making an MT4.5 shank ER40 collet chuck. You can't buy them (or anything else MT4.5) and I've wanted one for a while, so I decided it was time and got on with it:

The little piece in the bottom left corner is just a slug of steel with an M28×1.5 thread on the outside and an M10 thread on the inside. The collet chuck has the same M28×1.5 thread in the back, so if I put the insert in, I can hold the chuck in place with a draw-bar. If I'm not taking especially heavy cuts, I can remove the insert (and draw-bar) and the collet chuck then has a 26 mm through bore. I would have preferred a 30 mm through bore to match the maximum size of the ER40 collets, but I didn't think it left enough steel for comfort in the MT4.5 bit.

I don't usually take action shots, but the little stepper motor was doing a fine job cutting the taper for me, so I thought what the heck?

Works well. Bungee to the tranny and one to the saw bench and didn't go anywhere despite the wind.
Best 50 quid spent this winter.

All the heavier stuff is Mig welded or at least the vast majority. It would simply take too long to Tig it and personally I think Mig is stronger.
