You would be amazed what I did on my Myford badged Drummond M Type (my first lathe) Wors one to do was bore a hole of 25mm dia through 3" dia x 150mm long stainless, took a while and a lot of drill sharpens as the drill constantly chipped when the motor stalled

But yes a biggish lathe is really required for the stuff I do, the CNC one is bigger than the manual one but I use the manual more simply because most of my stuff is one off work and often made up as I go. I would certainly love a manual lathe the same make as my CNC one, a Tarnow TUR-50SN, it is a beast of a machine compared to the Triumph even though the capacity is not that much more.

Made a switch for my wood lathe, gonna sell it on now that I have another lathe with bigger capacity so I figure it needs to be ready to use. I had also mounted a slower 3ph motor, but I put the original 1ph motor back on for this. It's a british made lathe, sometime in the 70s.

On the other side of the wall there's a simple homemade solar collector, insulated all black inside with black mosquito nets strung up inside.

I have had a thermostat and 12V power source connected to the thing and during winter it'd help heat the shop by passing air through the collector. The hinge is a cheapo way to prevent cold air rushing in when the sun is not shining and the fan is not blowing. Usually the hinge would be down but when the fan starts it lifts it up, air is sucked in through a filter box I have placed higher up so it doubles as a shop air cleaner.

Hmmm not much to say really, just a solar air heater, guess I can show some pictures of the build

It's main weakness is that it's too small. I am going to build a bigger one in the future, also plans for a long horizontal model that will pre-heat the air drawn in from the outside.

Job for the next few days will be altering trailers to fit the new 6.9m Cheetah Catamarans that I recently fitted out.
First job is to extend the axles by 200mm and also raise them by 200mm so that the body of the trailer sits lower.

Removed the 4 wheels and hubs and cut off stub shafts today.

Then headed back to the workshop and cut up some 70mm x 70mm x 5mm box and plasma cut some gussets from 10mm plate, hopefully I will get back up to the trailers tomorrow afternoon to start welding them.

Well these lads are good at fibre glass work, should anything go wrong they will have the boats patched up in no time

This was the one I was worried about, was way back in 2000 and I had welded the keel supports to hold the boat upright whilst lifting and transporting.
The lifting wasn't too bad as the crane had the hull slung but the transporting was relying on my welds keeping the boat upright and they were welded to an old rusty trailer frame.

Just finished off the last few bits of a job that has been ongoing for the last few months. My brothers van was in need of a few repairs if it was ever to go through another MOT. He bought an Iveco Daily Extra Long wheelbase van for cheap knowing that it may only last a few years. It was fairly crudely converted into motocross / camper van... that was 5 or so years ago . Last spring saw the first MOT fail (due to patches of rot on the sills and chassis cross members) I replaced the cross members with box section and done the bare minimum in the way of welding required to get it through the MOT. Roll on 12 months and the rot had only got worse in other areas as expected. It was SORNed whilst my brother decided on what to do with it - scrap it (which seemed a shame as mechanically it is spot on) and look for something else or patch it up again.

After plenty of looking something better was way over budget and those in the right price range would have needed just as much work in 12 months time anyway. After a few weeks of debating it we decided that we (what I really mean is I) would go to town with the repairs - replacing anything even slightly suspect with good metal. Its taken up most of my free time for a few months repairing and replacing: Front subframe / leaf spring plate support plate, 2 chassis cross members, near enough the entire inner sills on both sides from the rear axle forward, patches to the inner and outer sills from rear axle back, all 8 chassis cross member to inner sill supports on both sides, floor pan from rear axle backwards, lower rail of rear door and rear slam panel bodywork (or whatever its called below the rear doors) patches of floor pan in and around the rear arches, Chassis rail running through the engine bay under the washer bottle and a patch on front near side wheel arch - and that's just what I can remember!!! as always the list grows as you start cutting out and TBH if I'd have known from the start just how bad it would get I might not have even started. All in all 2 x 1m x 2m x 1.2mm and 1x 1.2m x 2.4m x 1.5mm zintec sheets a full 20l bottle of gas and a lot of wire was used along the way

After all that welding the whole lot was scraped down ready for paint and under seal. Wheel arches were stone chipped with UPOL gravitex, 4 x 1l cans of Dinitrol ML were injected into all the cavities and also one coat to the entire underneath of the van. I got through 5 cans of Dinitrol 4195 on the underneath after that to try at least to keep rust away for a few years. Rear floor pan painting I'm not responsible for - my brother helped out by lashing red oxide on with a brush - to match the temp repairs I quickly covered up with it last year. Around the rear doors etc and a few rust spots on the outside and patches to outer sills were treated to epoxy primer and then Iveco white 2k - the white patch on the rear left was a test to see if red oxide stands up to 2k - and it does (unlike anything cellulose based which lifts red oxide better than paint stripper!). My brother decided not bother having the rest of the floor sprayed white to match (as was the plan if there was no reaction) as it's all being covered up with ply boards anyway I think for shames sake I will cover up that white test patch with some more red oxide though...

And for the photos - In my haste to get on with it I didn't take very many (hence posting it in here rather than start a dedicated project thread) but as per the rule.. photos or it didn't happen... I have these to offer:

If there was ever a need for a dislike button... . I haven't got room inside or even enough hard standing out to attempt an engine removal / rebuild or swap but given that necessity its the mother of all invention I'd never say never as it would never be worth paying some one to do it.

Mate has one an ex-minibus. Looked to be solid, no mot failures or advisories. Just a little bit of rot in the rain channel on the roof...at least he thought it was...the whole roof was rotten around the channel. Ended up taking a roof off another van. Apparently all the condensation from the passengers collected there running off the roof

Got the 4 extensions welded today and one partially welded in place. It was a bit of a pain as I couldn't really get in to grind off the galvanising so next 3 will be tacked true and then unbolted from the trailer which will make grinding and welding easier.
Was using the wee GYS and the Nikko rods again today. Welder performed well but a few of the rods went all spattery the last 40 or 50mm, not sure why but other than that they welded fine. Welds on the box are not the best, never have liked welding it as I just cant seem to get a really neat weld on it, the welds on the gussets were reasonable though.

Did some more cutting on the plasma today, brackets and end caps for bolting box section supports to the trailer to prevent the axles extensions twisting.
Having issues with piercing killing the nozzles so need to figure out where things are going wrong but apart from that the plasma seems to be working well.

A few weeks ago, I had a long weekend away at a friends house.
She is a nice lady, her husband is another Norbert.

But, as I had some spare time, scarp metal, a welder and a hose to my self.
I was meant to be fixings the gates.
But, I was told the hnges had failed. No the 12" post had rotted. Not a week end job.

One especially for the Yorkshiremen (and wannabee Yorkshiremen) ...

After a bit of a workshop clear up I noticed I had a lot of used 5" cutting discs that are too small to use on the 5" grinder - I recalled someone on the forum (apologies for know remembering who) mentioning that they had made / had seen made an adapter to fit them on an air cut off tool and thereby get a bit more use from them.

An hour or so on the lathe (probably 5 mins for you real machinists) resulted in something that works far better than I ever expected it too:

A third of the weight, bigger bore, better flow, and more noise. Whats not to like?
