Sounds like a job for a cnc mill, I made a wooden mold for some rocker covers and had the engraving done on them at a sign shop that had a cnc engraver. It never lost its definition when I had them cast,

Good morning gents.
Looking at the above projects, mine seems to be insignificant. But mt first post here, some 1" NB pipe former rolls for 'Donna'. Since these are available from the factory 'in Turkey' then whip them up my self. All machine shops around here are busy '3 week turn around' so had a go myself. I, at least thought not too bad for a first attempt. Bit of screwing around, but job done

Now all that is left is to complete the difflection roll and I can start spiraling 1" pipe.

Roof plant screens - structural support steel and cladding. About 200/300 linear metres per school so 1750m done in total. Bases need weathering in by the main contractor.

Got the bracket for the forward roller welded in place and the roller made.

So that was all the outside welding done so the boat was put back in the water. Would have preferred it to stay up the slip a few more days but there was a bigger boat on the cradle in front and it is being put in the water first thing tomorrow so there was no choice

Also had an emergency job, boat had lost its propeller, they were lucky that it happened as they were just coming alongside the pier so at low water they managed to find the prop in the mud. The nut however wass impossible to find so I had to make a new one. Only had a rectangular chunk so pressed it against the 3 Jaw with the tailstock and took light cuts to round it off a bit.

Turned it round and gripped in the chuck and turned down to the max dimensions of the hex.

Bored and tapped it 1inch BSF.

Transferred to the Chiron to make the hex.

Then finally back in the lathe and parted it off.

Ha ha well I do it all the time and not a problem yet, worst thing that happens is if you take too much of a cut then the part stops spinning and you burst an insert. It is advisable though to have a centre hole drilled so that the revolving centre has a good hold of it, I just centre drill it on the pillar drill.

Four trailing arms for a Locost car that I've been sort of building on and off (Mainly off) for the last 15 years. Apologies for the grainy

I recently had a new garage/workshop built so no more excuses for not getting anything done. Needed to make four identical arms so knocked up a jig and it worked really well for repeat-ability. Welds are really hot for the material thickness but not very neat. The welds are very short so by the time I had got my eye in the weld was completed. I practiced first on some spare material and did some destructive testing so I'm happy that they are sound.

It was the first time in a while that I had to do some safety critical welding. This was quite instructive as I actually thought about it properly and applied a bit of discipline instead of just clagging stuff together any old how. It was an eye opener as to how many bad habits that I'd managed to get into. For once I took a bit of notice of torch angle, kept as short an arc as possible (which really helps), got comfortable, supported the torch properly and shed some light on the weld area. I know its really basic stuff but I seemed to have forgotten it all along the way. I found it a good refresher and now know to take more care from now on.

Next time I will use the MB15 torch rather than the MB25.

There's a 'correct' way to do the job and proper way a way to get it done! I'm sure there must be a humorous way to write a method statement for making that nut to give an apprentice.

Must admit that I do that myself quite a bit. My lathe chuck is 3" bore so not the lightest thing to remove and no lifting gear around the lathe. I do have a four jaw chuck and have had it in the box from new 5 years. Why go through all the heartache of swapping chucks and setup for a 5 min job, when this method works perfectly

Likewise, the 4 jaw is on the floor just at the side of the lathe but it would take a lot longer to remove the 3 jaw and put the 4 jaw on than it did to take half a dozen light cuts to make it round to grip in the chuck before I started attacking it with heavy cuts

She still need some fine tuning of the forming rolls, but hay 'she's working. And thanks gents for the likes and support, I would probably speak for some/ most that we do actually like / enjoy what we do and we are proud to share it with others and that others that might be a little apprehensive to have a go, then do so

Good morning Hood.
Yes. The plan is to make refrigeration chiller pipes to fit into the tanks of fishing vessels. I do a 'bit' for the longliners here and we need to cool the sea water in the brine tanks for the storage of the product. The main species caught is 'Tuna' 'Yellowfin, Bigeye and Bulefin (southern)', along with the other longline catch. We can get these up in a top corner of the tank or in a vertical corner, out of the way so it dosn't affect the product. There is also plans to do a few of the trawlers, up grade their systems. This seems much easier to construct than getting 'U' bends, pipe and welding them together. The then completed panels are then fixed to the walls of the brine tanks, but take up space and if the boys are not careful they freeze the product to the coils.

Thanks for the info Henry, longlines haven't been used in this area for years but maybe one day they will make a comeback.


Well today I got the top of the table plasma cut along with the sides/base of the bait box that is attached to the table and got it all welded. Still have a roller to make for the corner of the wheelhous, jog lever and controls to fit and make a box for and a few other bits and pieces. Not working on this tomorrow as I have another job to do but hopefully I will have it finished Monday.

Also maybe due to the very hot weather here even the Westbrook 316 rods had the slag peeling rather that the usual pinging.

After a bit of a workshop clear up I noticed I had a lot of used 5" cutting discs that are too small to use on the 5" grinder - I recalled someone on the forum (apologies for know remembering who) mentioning that they had made / had seen made an adapter to fit them on an air cut off tool and thereby get a bit more use from them.

An hour or so on the lathe (probably 5 mins for you real machinists) resulted in something that works far better than I ever expected it too:

oh that is a good idea I would not mind one of those save throwing the old discs away fancy making some more?
