A few weeks ago, I had a long weekend away at a friends house.
She is a nice lady, her husband is another Norbert.

But, as I had some spare time, scarp metal, a welder and a hose to my self.
I was meant to be fixings the gates.
But, I was told the hnges had failed. No the 12" post had rotted. Not a week end job.

Also maybe due to the very hot weather here even the Westbrook 316 rods had the slag peeling rather that the usual pinging.

That would kill me if the humidity was the same as here.
Way back in 1988 I was in Canada for a holiday visiting the other half's sister and it was around the 40 degrees, even the spray from Niagra wasn't reaching the road It was however a bearable heat as the air was dry.

I recently had a new garage/workshop built so no more excuses for not getting anything done. Needed to make four identical arms so knocked up a jig and it worked really well for repeat-ability. Welds are really hot for the material thickness but not very neat. The welds are very short so by the time I had got my eye in the weld was completed. I practiced first on some spare material and did some destructive testing so I'm happy that they are sound.

It was the first time in a while that I had to do some safety critical welding. This was quite instructive as I actually thought about it properly and applied a bit of discipline instead of just clagging stuff together any old how. It was an eye opener as to how many bad habits that I'd managed to get into. For once I took a bit of notice of torch angle, kept as short an arc as possible (which really helps), got comfortable, supported the torch properly and shed some light on the weld area. I know its really basic stuff but I seemed to have forgotten it all along the way. I found it a good refresher and now know to take more care from now on.

Next time I will use the MB15 torch rather than the MB25.

Used to use Nissan Bluebird ones as they fit perfectly and are fully adjustable, like hens teeth I suppose now

is that a "fifie" or a "Zulu" fishing boat lying alongside? deck layout looks rigged for sail? or maybe just a modern conversion. Saw a "Zulu" up in Lerwick harbour a few years ago. incredible to see, history afloat...

edit - scratch that looked again and saw her name, Kommandoren, ex Baltic trader vessel..

Yes, built about 1890 if I recall. Owned by Hays Ships and used mainly for hospitality.
There is a Zulu moored in Arbroath.

I changed the inner skin (frame) of the bonnet of my car as it was rotten, Ive had a new bonnet for years and decided that my rusty wreck wouldn't look right with a shiny new bonnet, so I ended up removing both bonnet tops by bending back the lips

the new framework was stripped back to bare metal

I do like using nylon filament abrasive brushes like this

as they flex to the shape you are trying to clean, they don't dig in, the last for ages, dont leave shrapnel like steel wire brushes and leave a finely brushed finish. they can only be used on grease and oil free surfaces though. at this stage I was tempted just to lacquer the frame

but instead decided to paint it with lechler epoxy primer, which was my first time using it, so in future I'll be using this for decorative panel work and Jotun 87 under the car

and then I had the old and the new bonnet parts

and the writing was from nearly 15 years ago when I turned up at car shows with an engine bay that looked like this

and people wondered if it actually worked, but a few years ago it didn't clean up too badly

I think anyone else would have just changed the bonnet, but it just wouldn't have looked right to me

and it was practice for reskinning the doors for my herald. folding the lip of the bonnet top over the frame was pretty easy using a hammer and a block of wood. for tightening the grip of the top around the frame I just used water pump pliers (for leverage) and large wooden lollipop sticks in the jaws to prevent the panel being marked.

Good morning gents.
No problem, will get some photos and some vids of up coming jobs for those that are interested, not everyone is interested in boats. It dose also seem that some of my 'stuff' is insignificant to some of the posts that are being lodged here, so I thought no one would be interested. Now as Hood have said previously it has been 18 years since I have been on a boat fishing and hope that what I do now, won't stop so I don't have to go back. As some one said to me 'As a fisherman you make a good electrician'. Seems he was right and things have progressed from there, when the weather was bad, instead of going to the pub, I went the fix boats, and the rest is history.

Made some brackets for a customers UAV controller.

Lazy day today just knurled and pinned a cutlass bearing and plasma cut a RSS number from 3mm 316 and gave it a quick polish.

Had to make ends for the throttle and gear cables today as it would have been a 3 or 4 day wait for them.
Chopped up some brass on the bandsaw.

Rounded the end, machined a hole for the pin and also a slot to allow for the thread to protrude whilst adjustment was made. The end was threaded 1/4" UNF for the 43C cable.

Also had to make extensions inside the control handles for clamping the cables as originally they were meant for 33C cables so didn't have enough reach. Made a stainless box for the controls so that they could be mounted on the gunwale and also mounted the Jog lever to the rear of the roller frame. Made a roller to guide the ropes into the hauler sheaves and called it a day at 7pm. Boat is going to sea tomorrow to trial things out and any tweaks that need done I will do on Friday when I will also finish off the edgings with some 16mm round bar., oh also still have to make a rounded slide door for the end of the bait box.

This is exactly why I have the lathe / mill etc at home. There is no real urgency in my life to do stuff like this but the ability to just make stuff rather than the 'easy' option of buying it.

Doing engine conversions etc is so much more productive when you dont have to search out for some odd adapter with a metric widget at one end and a BSP orifice at the other when an hour of fettling in the shed has it done.

Oh for sure, there is a huge difference between industry and a bloke in his shed.

in the past I've approved 'enormous' amounts of money spent to save time where you have to look at the bigger picture :-)
