I am soo jealous your work area looks soo.....uncluttered, is this at home?
My garage is over spilling with kids bikes, her seasonal attire in suitcases(some of which still has the labels on from the shop which she states is inspirational attire)
Give me a workshop, leave me to my own devices (and advice from this forum) and I reckon I could fix the world in a few weeks.

Could you put a threaded insert in the end face of the vise jaw and then make something like a milling vise stop?

For the really narrow stuff, would dog or puppy holes in the fixed jaw be of any use? You could make a pair of hexagonal blocks that fit over the dogs, that are drilled eccentrically to give different offsets.

I'm probably going to make some little square wooden blocks with 20 mm holes in that sit over the top of the dogs. That'll result in a softer "jaw" to press against the workpiece, but will also make the minimum width much smaller. Once it gets really small, it's unlikely I'll be clamping it in this way: I'll either stick it directly in the vice or just use double-sided tape or hot glue to hold it down to something bigger.

I like the idea of the threaded insert. I hadn't thought of that but it could work quite well.

Working on a bench in my new ‘shop. Plans were for the drill press to be right at the end, next to the door, and the lathe at the far end, and the space in the middle for general working, vice, bench grinder etc.

But I’m wondering if it might be better to have the drill and the lathe next to each other, well away from the door.

Still waiting for deliveries of wood and stuff to move on with the project. I ordered a bunch of 2 x 4 and 2 x 3 to build the bench, then found I had enough off its left to get this far. The top will be 2 layers of OSB and 1 layer plywood dropped into the frame.

@Morrisman I'd keep the grinder as far away as possible from the lathe, the dust can travel further than you think.
If your vice has a swivel base, I'd have it next the door so that long workpieces can 'stick out' if needed. With your lovely new space that probably won't be an issue though.

Good points. I like to have an empty space to grind into when working in the vice, with an angle grinder, but this arrangement doesn’t work unless I have the vice at the door end, then I can turn it round so sparks hit the floor. I have three vices, so I can use whatever is suitable.

Bench grinder, I may make that removable, as it doesn’t get much use.

I had this setup at my last place, but it was put together more for something to do than as a practical arrangement. I never used the polisher, rarely used the belt sander. I won’t have the space for it now.

They’ve got 15° slope, I done another with 30° slope and it was too extreme. . Just going in a drawer these lot, I was fed up searching for the right spanner when I need to do one bolt on the lathe.

Just get a spare correct sized spanner and keep it by the lathe . Or do like I have done , the four spanners that the lathe needs are hung on big nails on a beam of wood set about two foot three above the bed of the lathe within very easy reach without having to reach over a running lathe .. The beam also holds two lathe pointing white light LED floods and all the old fashioned spring calipers you used to find in a bench fitters tool box including a F type verinier before micrometers both analogue & digital became the norm .

Cardboard aided designe allowed a lump of pine to be saved from the wood pile.

Cut out with a French Bow Saw, hand filled and hand sanded.

I acquired this the other day, a cutting gauge. Minus the blade and the wedge.

The hole is square and tapered on the inside.

The blade was hand shaped and a double angle, single cutting edge ground on.

To make a small wedge, glue two bits wood together.
Shape one side and use the other to hold it, makes life simpler.

Ardy Drill the bit of wood that you are going to make the wedge out of so it will trap an oboe masonry nail when cut & fitted . Grind the nail to a pointed blade , .they last for years and can be used on metal if the need arises

I have modified the cutting blade again.

It is now a Wood veneer cutting blade. To be used on a MIS project.

Do you want an 8 inch dia inch thick round of Black Delrin plastic to make the blocks . It cuts well on a band saw or with a fine toothed hand saw, can be bored & turned to a remarkable finish . If so PM me your address & I'll send you one FOC .

An old RIFA capacitor gave up in my small 150A stick welder while I was welding some rebar. I didn't know what had happened when I saw it, only that there was loads of smoke coming from the machine, thought it was on fire at first. Fortunately an easy repair since I had two spares at home. 1980s components so I guess they lasted quite long.

Yes, in 20/20 hindsight..... there is more garden left, but not a lot. And I do have a single car garage at the front.

Today I fitted more 'sensible' castors to my 'auxiliary' [] trolley - the small originals were making indentations in the costco foam tiles and became difficult to pull/move about when loaded. So, off with the old



and on with the new


Much easier now, and an indication of a lack of thought/forward planning initially...

True , I keep telling guys to plan for old age & incapacity and get everything on welded boarded frames fitted with quality bearing'd lockable 360 degree castors . I'd never be able to do half of what I can now I'm 80% disabled if everything hadn't been deeply thought about , planned and implemented .

It was a lot cheaper to do it 15 years ago as well
