Is the reason for the wooden fencing on the side wall to stop the postie others taking a short cut ?

You got posh lathe with metric dials or CNC measuring then Brad ?

Metric disks and a micrometer does the trick for me. I have enough tool holders and mt tooling strewn around to have the spanner’s under the swarf too.

Today was jam making day, we bought about 15 kilos of strawberries at a good price (40€) and sorted them, cooked them (some, ~1/3rd was just crushed and sugared for an uncooked jam) and canned them. They will all be frozen.

Hopefully this will last us until next year, this goes in everything, in cakes, on pancakes, milkshakes, you name it. The ones in the square containers is the uncooked jam.

Tried the hot air gun trick?

Did this to Brother in Laws Transit and combined with a machine polish it looked very good.
I also cleaned out the interior - starting with a pitch fork and gradually coming down the grades.
SWMBO recovered the seats in some leftover materials.

He kept asking when we wanted to borrow it again - it also had a full fuel tank on return!

Today I made 20 port light toggles from 8mm dia 316 and some 16mm dia 316 bored out to 8mm and parted at 5mm thick on the lathe. Then welded them together.

Quick wire brush and they are ready for sending off to be fitted to the Waverly paddle steamer.

Next up I chopped up a couple of sheets of 5mm 5083 Aluminium and then tacked them together.

Fully welded and just waiting for the boatyard to open on Monday so I can get 3 tubes rolled.
It is a hopper to take the Mackerel from the Port and Starboard stripper boxes and then guide them into a fish box.

Concreting: just 4x 3.5bag mixes as i'm taking it easy.
Got halfway through and thought "I'm sweating buckets".
Turned out it was insistent drizzle. (As in, insisting i got wet ) Never even noticed!

Another potentially simple wee project that I didn't really need to make but managed to go successfully totally bonzai overkill on. Wanted to make a wee stand for the three sizes of TIG filler rod that I keep, so used up some scrap bits and went to work with the angle grinder first of all, as I normally do, and then once overkilled the wire brush as I did so much TIG welding on it that there was so much heat it into it that went brown all over - I'd have been happy with just some nice TIG welding rainbows but I didn't stop at a sensible tacking to keep the bits in place as I was having so much fun with the new machine.

My sister has this bbq 10 year and the actual bbq is fine works perfect and is a really good one but the wooden framework was rotten and ready to fall apart so made a stainless frame for her it’s a family freebie so finish wasn’t overly important

A few days and a one long day.

Stanley Block plane.

As it was.
Complete and working with a sharp edge.

So it was used to show MIS how to set up a black plane and the parts.




A wooden handle screwdriver.



The hard varnish was all but gone, the tip was not square.



Using a cabinet scrapper, another "How to" lesson the old finish was removed and a smooth finish put back onto the handle.

With a sharp cabinet scraper you can get a very smooth finish. Just takes practise.



Tip re-ground, metal work cleaned up. The tip was then heated and tempered. The annoying kink the shaft was also removed.
The handle was stained and 8 coats of French polish applied.


Tack lifter.

This led to a debate.
Screwdrivers do come in tip sizes to fit imperial and metric screw slots.
But a "Know it all had to try and argue, but when it was pointed out he was wrong, he went home.
Bye dan, again.


This led onto talk about, do tack lifters?
The answer?

Yes they do, but it makes little difference. The jaws match a metric or imperial measurement.





This needed some TLC. Mainly from hard use over the years.
The shaft was removed from the handle.
The hole drilled out to 12mm and a dowel glued into it.
Then it was bored out to 6mm.
Again a cabinet scrapper was used to place a decent finish.



Handle was stained and varnished. Quick drying stuff is ok to use.

The shaft was cleaned up, the tip was heated to red heat, dipped into oil. Cleaned up and tempered to light blue. Then wire wool and linseed oil was used to finish the shaft.

The shaft was hot fitted into the repaired handle.

Now, why did we just not at best, fit a new handle?

Education.
Todays MIS members didn't want to build stuff, but do something useful.

2 Push pins, among other items.

They both worked, but again the hard finish was starting to flake.
Originally it was a stain then a thick coat of lacquer.



Pop apart.
The "Pin" needs to be straight, if not it will wear the hammer (Lower middle)
The old finish was again removed with a scrapper. This is half way through, you can see the colour of the beech beginning to show
. The old stain can leech back through a new finish.



All done.

Ardy , there are also differenced in the tips of engineers electricians & cabinetmakers screw drivers wrt the angle they should be ground to as well as the width of the screw head slots . These days the tool manglers just have one set for everything and frequently tear the slot shoulders out .

Those pin pushers are expensive .. the last one I purchased about six years ago cost me in the region of £18 brand new ...had a hard plastic impact resisting handle too just in case a tapommeter was needed & a precision brass body .

Do any of them have a magnetic anvil tip to hold the pins in the barrel on the way to putting them in the material?

Both do.
RHS the top is a ring magnet.

final got round to making a handle, it’s an old chopping board, epoxied together and aluminium nails as the rivits. Got about another 20 to go

should have said, the blanks were rescued from the scrap bin a good few years ago. The laser etching had gone wrong

Finished a barrel lid coffee table top today. Well, nearly finished, it's only had it's first couple of coats of danish oil. The slats are only held together by 2 nails between each of them (in normal use they would be held together in compression by the rest of the barrel) and they do not start life particularly flat. So a bit of work to get it flat then inlay 3 bits of teak for some structure, I think it gives it quite a nice look too. Just need to work out what I'm doing for the base next.

And the Jarra wood and oak chopping block is finally getting a few coats of oil. I quite like the lighter oak for the inlay pieces and the darker oak (ex barrel staves) for the edging pieces.
