Just need to find some foam for the handles.

There's a really good pipe lagging called Armaflex that might be up to the hard wear on those handles. Ordinary pipe lagging might or might not last long. I can't guarantee the Armaflex would either.

WE over here haven't used steel for the hauler plates, most popular are cast alli ones. I have also made up 316S/S, bronze and ones from alli plate. Alli ones wear the fastest, S/S eventually polish up and slip, the best seem to be bronze

These are cast iron, stainless is occasionally used but never seen Alu or bronze, don't think they would last too long. What are they hauling with them? It is 12-16mm rope and with the sand that is in the ropes it is very abrasive.
A lot of the fishermen now use pressed steel disposable wear plates which fit over the cast plates, they usually get a month or two out of them before they replace.

Excellent tool design 8ob, Time and man power saver,Plus preventing damage to the stakes from hammer blows. I made a 6" bore post knocker ages ago for a horsey person, welded an inch thick top cap and four long tubular handles, the thing weighed in at just over sixty five pounds, Certainly no light weight,

Turned out better than I thought.
What would a pair of gates like these costs from a company, my costs for materials comes to around £380ish.

Super glued a spycam to my specs to try and film some welding

Also needing to make some 320mm dia stainless rings from 8mm stainless rod so started to make a quick/nasty ring roller. Cut the backing plate from some old rusty 16mm steel I had lying out the back, will hopefully get a chance to progress with the rest tomorrow.

Steel cuts nice, same with Alu but I struggle a bit on stainless. Think I just need to get some time on the table to get some practice in to get the best out of it.

I originally posted the first picture yesterday but realised there was an invoice next to them with my name and address visible.

Had to get the ac condenser off the roof so knocked these up.

I "made" my little magic eye profiler work again. It's been playing up for months but I haven't had time to play with it. It's following patterns and cutting well now I've re-soldered a few dry joints on the board .

Plasma cut the base for the ring roller yesterday, today I got a bit more done.
First up was making 3 Vee notch wheels from some 2" EN19 I had.

Next up I milled the two holes in the plate to accept the wheels and also cut a slot at the front to act as a guide for the third wheels moving block.

Flipped it over in the vice and milled a shallower slot on the back side.

That was the milling of the backplate completed.

Next I moved on to the sliding block. Only had a bit of 50mm square so shoved in in the Chiron and bored a hole to accept the wheel and rounded the end at 50mm dia.

Next was to cut to length in the bandsaw.

Then cut to width.

Then faced it off in the Chiron.

Then milled a 40mm dia round down to the depth of the guide slot.

Next job was to turn down the end on a hex setscrew and groove it. This was to fit into the moving block and a setscrew would sit in the groove to allow rotation but at the same time keep the screw captive in the block.

Finally I tapped a piece of 25mm x 12mm steel to accept the 12mm thread and welded it to the back plate.

Still have the collars to make to hold the lower wheels in and also the handle for winding the moveable wheel but they will have to wait until another day.

Will it work? I have no idea but time will tell.

Not made by me.
But Mini Me, she saw an idea on here, made a mess of my workshop. but had fun.



One old horse shoe, looks like she found it at the bottom of the box, going by the ones she rejected.

The eyes are cut from an old extinguisher, that's why there are 3 drills out. One for the piolt drill, one because Mini Me needed the 13mm chuck and the 10mm one was no use.

The mouth is a cut off from another shoe, hence why all 4 grinders are out.
Then a M5 bolt brazed on, yes all safety gear out, but bottles turned off.



The back is oak, yes Mini Me used the good work.
That's when it is all finished, but needs waxing and polishing.




Finally all done.
but now Mini Me has disappeared, not in the mess what was made.
So I guess she is out with friends.

Just out of curiosity, how long does it take you to input the instructions to the CNC for an operation like that?

For something simple like that maybe 5mins from drawing the part in CAD, passing to CAM, choosing toolpaths and producing the code, then transfer to the lathe via LAN and open on the lathe ready to go.
