Finally made a saddle bracket for my telescope, to replace the broken one. Used my cheap multi cutter end mill thingy to square up the aluminium, then cut, drilled, and tapped the necessary after removing lots of metal. Was impressed how well the multi head cutter took off metal, and that all the holes lined up. All done on my little Warko mill.

Made a cod at the last cut, by inadvertently using a blunt end mill, which sort of ‘smeared’ the metal, rather than cut it. Nothing that can’t be sorted with a bit of filing when I’m doing the last bit of finishing before painting.

My plan is to eventually dismantle the whole thing, as the unit got a bit rusty after being stored in a leaky hut, but a few hours on it yesterday has beaten the red death back enough to make everything useable. I’ve mounted the telescope in the stand, and everything feels secure.

I have to ask why? Material that thin you could persuade over, simply clamped in the vice?

You're right, but I've had a hard time getting the lines perfect when I'm trying to make repair parts that need to line up perfectly but the real benefit was fro. The round nose dies that allowed me to form with a radius in the edge. This was just one die.

My brother asked me to make a new filler cap for the expansion bottle on his Jeep Cherokee. The old one has gone hard and split when he went to check the coolant. I had some delrin blanks so I knocked one up on the lathe and mill. Has a 6tpi thread but it's a thin round-topped profile on the bottle. I had to grind a rounded tool and take my best guess on the depth and profile. Ended up a nice snug fit.

A guitar stand. Only about the 4th thing I've fabbed. Don't look too closely at the welds: they will get better with practice and it's all well stuck. Clamping things at odd angles was a challenge and it's not exactly precision work but it does what it is supposed to.

Tried splitting a log with the chainsaw today, but it's too puny to really go a good job (Stihl MS170). Had to use wedges for the final split, then I evened it out with the axe, and finally the electric planer.

Got some ER40 collets earlier in the week.

Today the collet blocks arrived.

So I thought it rude not to test them out.
First the slot with it stood on end.

I had to rewrite the code and also had to use a smaller cutter for the next index. Previously for the arc I had used a 20mm dia carbide cutter which left 0.1mm clearance to the chuck jaws on the Hartford indexer. The ER collets however are clamped 0.4mm below the nut surface so that was now -.03mm Used a 14mm cutter instead and all was fine.

Didn't have a proper spanner for the ER40 so a quick drawing in Fusion.

Some 5mm stainless onto the plasma.

I now have an ER40 spanner and it won't rust

First Machine is back to live.
This machine was tried to repair further.
They miss broken Z, rectifier, mains contactor and some other stuff. But they changed primary igbt modules to new ones so I got the old one as spares because they are still working.
Now waiting for my new ultrasonic cleaner to sweep main pcb.
Anyway the other machine needs to bee serious rebuild because several molten components.
If you ever discover such machine.
Try to test them.
Really good ones (if they are ok :-)

Made a knob

It's a handle for a cast iron casserole pan, the original was some brittle plastic and broke months ago. I did the bottom with a form tool ground from a parting blade on it's side, couldn't be bothered to grind a concave tool for the top so that was just freehand with a big corner radius tool and a file. M6 thread in the bottom to hold it to the lid and to conveniently hold it for turning the top face, it probably wouldn't have held up to the cutting force on an inch long form tool anyway.

But I did also some other stuff.
My wife decided me to build a shelter for our brand new rabbits.
She did the plans but may forget dimensions.
So it was up to me to source some space and material.
Now need to get it weatherproof.

Nowt wrong with using a file on the lathe. I do it frequently, for taking edges off & the like. Sometimes it'd take longer to fart around altering tool position or swapping tools than it does to use a file.

Never tested but they feel like they have been hardened. Probably just case but not going to try and see as I don't need tapped holes
