Today - I made a mess!
Sanded an old table top to a glass like finish, about five hours, gave it a spot of varnish.. ended up with fish eyes the size of 5p pieces.
Just cleaned it all off with thinners before it dried to save some rubbing tomorrow.
It's my 86 yo mum's and it needs to be right ;-)

Made a few guttering brackets this afternoon out of 25x5 flat.
Bent the big curve cold around a suitable round thing. Then used a bit of heat from a burning lamp to get the other two bends.
I used a bit of angle in the vice to weld bits to, to make a jig adding bits for each of the different bends.

Neats Foot oil will keep it as soft & supple as a baby's bum , but it will darken it & you'll get a well worn polished leather patina if you use it .
When you make your next case put the studs in before you mould the leather , make it over size so you can glues & stitch a chamois or other soft leather lining right across the whole rectangle of leather to stop any scratching of the screen . Once you have got the stretching & forming done , sow it up again , then cut off the first stitching

But as a home made steel casting I am pleased.

Yes, the handle is reused from a garden dibber.
Yes, the cost of my time and effort I could of brought a better hammer.
But.The whole set up was done for under £15. Most of that was charcoal, casting sand and some fire clay.
But it was done at home, a great learning curve, great fun and educational.
But I did it on my own.
No, I may not repeat it. I have done it, I can do it again if I wish.
No, it is not perfect, but I don't care.

today - I made my temperature gauge read where it should do. I must admit I was a little peeved to have to pay 40 quid for a thermostat where an equivalent for a Vauxhall insignificant or a Ford Mundane would have been about a fiver. The actual thermostat itself is nowt complicated so we better put it in a special plastic housing to bump the price up.

Yep, its a disgrace really, I did the egr stat and the main coolant stat albeit over a six month period but not far short of eighty quid to do them both.
Front disk and pads was about sixty quid - all trade. Certainly not the cheapest car to maintain but it does go well enough when its working.
There is a thread about bangernomics which I don't feel I can fit into.
Front and rear disks / pads + handbrake shoes
Front ABS sensor
Starter motor
Coolant stat
EGR stat
2 front wings
MAP sensor - although if this clumsy person hadn't dropped it doing the swirl flaps that wouldn't have been required
Glow plug controller
1 Glow plug
(edit) forgot the rear steel brake pipes, flexys and calipers!
But it makes me smile now as I can scan it and there are (currently) no errors.

I dropped the coolant outside, reversed into the shed out of the rain, pulled another pipe and spent the next two hours in a pool of coolant...

I made the seatbelt receiver on my VW T5 Kombi rear seat work again.
Bl**dy messy kids with sweet wrappers and all sorts stuffed down inside .
Had to fully removed it from the seat , push the red button down and fish around with a bent safety pin .
2 bl**dy hours later, I managed to hook a blue bag from salt n shake crisps out that was properly jammed in there ..... success.
The wife reckons I should have just bought a new one.....pffft...
