I made one after watching jodies video too. They work really well. I was always having problems trying to finish nice and cleanly from losing gas coverage when I flicked away to end the weld.

I new that lathe would come in handy... made a handle for the back gear. Id love to have made it round but don't have the skills.
Not really skill involved, you either use CNC, a form tool or a ball turning attachment. It would be nigh on impossible to do one free hand. What you did is just as good

Started making the ends for a roller for the back of a boat, just steel rather than the usual stainless.
Cut the ends on the plasma and bored to suit the 2" stub shafts and welded them in and threw back in the lathe.
Turned OD, faced and then did the step.
Was going to weld into the end of the 12ft long roller but the guy couldn't remember if it was 2" or 50mm housed bearings he had ordered so had to stop, now waiting for the bearings to arrive, were supposed to be today but they never came.
Welded up a bracket for a fixing for a rudder thingy ma jig that I will be making. Not sure the name of it but basically an extra section on the back of the rudder that hinges round as you turn the rudder, gives the boat more steerage.
Spent the rest of the day hauling this apart.

Started on this today. Removing the outdrives, inboard engines etc and going to be making Alu pods for the back and fitting outboards and a 30HP donkey engine for the hydraulics. Will take a while to do as it will be a lot of work with pods, mounting engines, wiring, hydraulics etc etc.
Today I managed to get the outdrive gearboxes boxes removed and one inboard disconnected, tomorrow I hope to get the other inboard disconnected and both lifted out and I can then start removing the outdrives mounting brackets.

In lieu of steel (which I would prefer), I have made this for the ride on. It can tug a little trailer which is v handy, but some things are a pain to put in the trailer, like heavy logs or planters, so this is perfect. The chassis had some square holes already, perfect for some scrap bolts I had to lock into.

Why does the customer want the conversion? Is it for performance, internal space, or something else?
Seems a lot of work, interesting project!

^^^ I find that the main reason is the serviceability. The 'legs' have their issues with water getting into the gearbox and damage to the drive shaft bellows, causing bearing failures. Outboards are just easier to change over in the event of a problem. For commercial vessels the 'legs' haven't been that reliable over time.

Henry has it right, the outdrives are not great for commercial boats, just don't stand up to the use/abuse.
Another reason is the inboard engines are so tightly packed in due to the narrow hulls that working on them is nigh on impossible.
The last reason is they were badly fitted or rather positioned. The original owners wanted flush hatches so mounted the engines low but that meant the drives were low, when fully tilted they were still 150mm or so below the hull line so grounding the boat wasn't the best, not great for a tidal harbour
To cap it off the hatches leaked so they put combings round to raise the hatches which makes it even more awkward to work on the engines.
