What is the cut surface finish on the alloy? Have you tried the raise the water level yet?

No not tried raising the level yet as I need to weld in a higher plate at the back of the water table and that probably won't happen for a long time, if ever

Finish is the usual, just a kind of fuzzy finish when compared to stainless or steel, zoomed in on a couple of bits from my photos to hopefully give you an idea.

Made a trapezoid thread, TR24 x 3mm pitch for the knee on my mill.
It needed to be 130mm longer due to the column extension.
I ground a cutting tool to suit from hss.
Very small cuts like 3 thou. Plunged in, no compound slide.
Better fit on the nut than the original.
I soon realised that I needed the follower rest, even with light cuts. Just the other end to machine down and keyway to cut.

Today I made my workshop/office staircase a little bit more protected.

Finally got the time to swap the injector on my Harris 49 cutting attachment
So I've had to remove the cutting lever ,by loosening the inox machine screw ,then I've removed the locking mechanism (a cam and a little spring)
Once done that , I've removed the cutting oxygen valve completely.
Loosening the 13mm cap (i think 1/2" ) under the lever ,the 16mm cap (5/16" i think) under the attachment ,the valve spring and stem .
Put the head in the vise , and used the impact screwdriver to loosen the injector cap , and the acetilene injector .
Repeat in reverse for reassemble.
Interesting fact ,some say that it's not necessary to change internal parts to swap fuel gasses ....
Just put the specific tip.
I'm glad I did .
Parts looks similar but they are not.
Propane Injector has a bigger orifice where the oxygen passes through.
Outer diameter of the injector is smaller than acetylene one , and it presents two groves that acetylene doesn't.
Acetylene injector has a little filter , propane doesn't
I believe that those differences are to let pass more oxygen ,to increase propane speed ,an make turbulence to better mixing the gasses .
The propane cap too is different , it's not just a cap ,it protrudes further into the mixing head than acetylene .
I believe to increase oxygen pressure between cap and injector.
Unfortunately I've forgot to make photos of the parts but I hope to have written enough to understand the differences between the two parts

Well after seeing the mitee bite pitbull clamps in action at work, i wanted some for myself... But they're horrendously expensive! So i downloaded the CAD file they helpfully provide, and ran some toolpaths in fusion... And made a couple of samples in mild steel. They came out beautifully, the surface finish is far better than my camera can capture. I've ordered some O1 tool steel to make the actual ones out of. I can probably make 6 of these in an hour, and would make a cost of about £2 each in material. Less, if i bought a proper length of steel for it.
It would probably still come out around £20 each including labour, tooling and hardening etc, but it's a fun exercise anyway.




I also knocked out 60 angle top brackets for conveyor legs.

Busy day today, stripped down the nearside front suspension of the Scimitar. This was then degreased, blasted and painted. Well industrial coating is more correct term. Same stuff is used in marine environments, highway structures and the nuclear industry. Hopefully will keep the rust at bay .

A big demijon holed bung or turned to size woden plug and tube with flattened top end to it is as good if you don't have welding gear .. also good for between car seats & consoles. using an 18 inch long a plastic tube witha 12 " boiling water heat flattened end

The (in)famous hay rake (https://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/stuff-you-have-made-today.67127/page-646#post-1685885) has done a couple of seasons, but the PTO shaft expired with prejudice recently, when a universal joint gave up. It has seen a lot of life in the past. One of the tine holders that hold the spring tines also fell off from a combination of fatigue and rust, and some of the return springs that lift the tines up have broken.

Got another PTO and pulled the broken tine holder off and the ones with the broken spring. There is a plastic bush that had flogged out, and the tine holder shaft has severely worn and bent. I priced up some new ones - $NZ27.50 each = 13.50 pounds! I thought I ordered a replacement for the broken tine holder but forgot to have it in the shopping cart on the online order.
Looking at tine holders on the weekend, and the condition of the others, there was no way I was paying for 20 new ones so it was time to fire up the forge. They are a L shape, with a 16mm shaft with a bend in the end. The bend matches a curved piece of flat that matches the curve of the tine coil spring. This piece also has a flat area for the tines to bolt onto and they are welded together at an angle.

Made a scratch built jig using the existing tine and guesswork for the dimensions

Drill another hole for a roll pin that anchors one end of a return spring, slop paint onto it and bolt in place. Only 19 more to go



I wish I had a 3D printer, as the plastic bushes are expensive for what they are and lightweight, and i am sure I could 3D print a better one for next to nothing.

Yes. I think it is a PZ 200. It is "very experiened" and has seen a lot of life over 50 years or more.
Where the tine holders fit into a hole on the end, some have ovalled out so I may have to do some welding to build them up to somehwere near round.

Nearly every farmer around here had a haybob, brilliant hay tedder & their light weight was well suited to use on small tractors like MF 35's. But as you discovered that leaves them a tad fragile & prone to wear.
My dad had a pottinger haystar, similar design, worked just as well but much more strongly built.

Very nice. How do you complete the welding once the foam block is in place? Filled with liquid? Surely that would take heat away from the weld?

Thankyou normally I'll go up a cup size for 3mm outside corners but I stuck with a 5 this time on some parts there's little to no etch but you run the risk of introducing dirt in the puddle I cut the corners of the foam where it's to be welded never tried it with the foam intact but I'd say it would be a mess
