I did wonder if I could flog them to the local "club" that portrays itself as a naturist retreat. According to TNOTW a few years back it's that and a lot more!

So I finally bought a set of "carpenters" pencils. 2mm self propelled pencil, really dead handy for a million reasons. Pain in the **** to pop it in your pocket though. Clip is too small and stiff plus you have to stow the sharp end or risk stabbing yourself. Forget about sticking it behind your ear. so...

I was working with a plumber chap called Kab. He loved it and wanted one so after a few iterations, I came up with this version and called it the Kab Klip. Then after giving him one of my pencils to go with it and on the lookout to buy another, I discover you can buy holsters already. Oh well Guess I'll have to invent something else.

Still think this is a decent little gadget though because the pencil clip is on the same side as the holster clip, everything stows "naturally". It can go inside a pocket or outside on a belt. Took a while to get just the right amount of grip.

The yellow one on the RHS reminds me a of volt stick pen. I have never seen a protective holster for one of those.

Would 3DP be able to make something like the surface of a nail file (or make a rectangle to glue on a piece of abrasive), so you could touch up the point of the carpenter pencil if you needed a sharp line?

It's a nut cracker. Used on walnuts so far.

I was going to ask if it was strong enough to work but obviously it is. What material did you use? Presumably it is solid or lots of walls / infinity first layers? Lots of questions from a 3DP beginner.

These have a built in sharpener, screws into the push button.

If you mean a regular oblong section wooden carpenters pencil then no. I don't think a 3d printed corrugated surface would last long enough. Better off reloading a slot with 80 grit emery paper.

It's not about protection, it's more about being able to pick it up and put it away as quickly and easily as possible. The built in "pocket clip" is way too fiddly and slow, plus you have to withdraw the sharp tip every time or risk stabbing yourself.

It's grey PLA by Overture.

Not sure on the layer thickness or infill. I did ask my lad to increase the infill of the bottom layers of the screw i.e the bit that presses against the nut.

I'll ask my lad when he surfaces before he heads off for New Years Eve somewhere. Tbh he's only just got in from last night. Oh to be young!

Wife has had a pretty poor 2023 but is going to Adelaide for work (the Adelaide Arts Festival 2024 - she's going to review 60 shows in 20 days!) in February, so I wanted her to have maximum looking-forward-to-it time.

Hence the "How many sleeps to Adelaide" counter-downer!

I was particularly pleased with the knurling - I originally thought of using the gear designer but instead created a single tiny 3-point-arc on the rim, and then used the circular pattern to repeat it 160 times round the circumference.

Thought I'd try the new motion system on a decorative print - MadCat/Timberwolf from Mechwarrior if there's any fans of the old games out there - came out beautifully given it was printing at 250mm/s



Also I never thought I'd find a roll of plastic sexy but damn this looks good:

Pity I need to dry it for 12 hours before I can use it...

Nylon 12 with chopped strand (not powdered) carbon fibre reinforcement in it.

Went to the BiL's for Boxing Day and he had a wooden one of these as a present. Said to my lad to try and copy it and half hour later with the Vernier he'd done the CAD. Original thread is square (ACME?) and nom. 5mm pitch so really quick to use. This is I think M22 x2.5:

Omitted to mention that this was for her birthday (3rd Jan) - she was delighted so that's some Fusion 360 well spent!

Needed to do some retraction tuning and found this cute little sheep to do it with - bit rough as I scaled it down to half size since I was testing something specific, but I think that'll be going to a friend of mine that loves sheep

My OH is a potter and wanted to start making small spoons in ceramic rather than buy in wooden spoons - these are to go with her range of salt pigs.

So she provided me with a few sketch ideas...


Which I then took to F360, started off with a 'form', halved it, shelled it, sliced the end and then 'lofted' the handle, filleted made handle and bowl a bit more robust and the basic model was complete

Then it was simply a case of making the mould by subtracting this model from a couple of blocks and also adding her stamp on the underside of the bowl and decoration to the inside...

About 5hrs of resin printing later - printed spoon (to check size) and printed moulds 12% oversize to allow for shrinkage.

First stage of firing complete, glazing and final firing still required (4 top left are undersize prototypes)...
