I was in secondary school, the toilets were outside, frozen for a couple of months, you made sure you went before leaving home. I don’t recall the school being closed, just over the Christmas holls & that was it, none of this half inch of snow & the world stops then, you just got on with it.

Making pavement slides outside the shops, and seeing the auld wans fall on their arrises and curse us roundly.

While a nipper in Glasgow, I wasn't aware of just how bad it was in Englandshire. Iirc, the next winter or two were quite cold also, but nothing like that one.

best laugh is watching mr BMW getting stuck and cant even get of there drives at a slight incline

And yet, when all we mostly had were rear wheel drive vehicles, we coped fine. Sure, the Mini / 1100 / 1300 had an advantage, but I don't recall many abandoned RWD vehicles most winters.
Tyre chains are marvellous things, too.

A 700 two stroke triple making 140bhp would be an interesting bike project. Not many snowmobiles in the uk though.

Just ran up to Niagra Falls last friday, the toll booths are gone, replaced with a bridge of overhead cameras.
I-90 in Ny state has been shutting the thruway down on very bad storms lately.

Looks like we will be getting something this weekend, mind a trip over here, just for old times ?....

I have to say, I really liked it around there, the people, scenery, etc. Last there in 2005. Been in lots of the USA for good periods of time, and I think that's still my favourite place. Could have changed a lot in 20 yrs though!

Modern tyres are simply too wide, don't have deep enough trip with enough grooves, and certainly not enough sipes, to work in fallen snow. Stick the right tyres on though . . . I have a 2 tonne, RWD, V8 Dodge - M&S badged tyres on it and it is much better than I expected - I would still take my Alfa or Lancia on winter tyres though. Both, on winter tyres, will out perform a Land Rover/Range Rover on less suitable rubber in snow.

I recollect a Renault 2cv (29bhp skinny tyres )going across a ploughed field without a problem, modern car struggling with excess power and wide wheels.

I actually never got stuck in a Capri. Did have a heart stopper when I gently fishtailed into the path of an oncoming lorry. I'd debated driving in the snow or not. He was going relativity slowly and smacked me back facing the right way. The only damage a slight dink on the o/s rear quarter. I drove home.

The white stuff all went away completely, then it came back with a vengeance last friday. Temps dropped to -16 on sunday but are back up to like -2 now and it looks like it all might melt away as quickly again. No idea if we'll get a white christmas or not

I watched the big snow of 1982 documentary last night, I didn't realise how badly it affected this country, I had to smile at the bit about the Queen not been able to get home due to road conditions, imagine been a country pub owner when someone knocks the door and asks if you can put the monarch up for the night

At least we could dig ourselves out to go shopping, get to work etc.

I remember the incident with the Queen getting stuck at Old Sodbury, it was on the local news at the time. The landlord was interviewed after & said it was a bit of a shock, but took them through to his personal quarters. He found it a great honour, as you can imagine.
