Travelling to Cornwall on Friday and glad I hadn't been Launceston/Bodmin way 24 hours before. Enough snow still that the kids jokingly asked if they could get out and make a snowman. The A roads were by and large clear but veer to the edge and you could still get into trouble as evidenced by the half dozen cars that had spun off with the Police in attendance.

Truro/Falmouth were virtually tropical mind despite the wind and rain.

Some do but it’s not common - having used them in Sweden I was amazed at how good they were in some pretty heavy snowfall. To be fair though, I’m the uk we don’t get that much snow, many years none at all.

I know they are better in general winter weather and low temperatures as well.

Except when the road has standing water on it,then you can hydroplane much easier. ( I had a prang doing that)

Probably makes sense we don’t use them much here!!

Standing water is a much bigger problem than snow over here with our wet weather!

Yes, SWMBO and my vehicles all have winter tyres on. In fact its been so wet here that the little runabout has had its winters on since October 2023, I never bothered swapping it back to “normal” tyres

I've used winter tyres for close to 30 yrs (not the same set!). Best yet were some 22 quid Colway remoulds - I could get body roll in the Lancia cornering on snow covered roads

I've been surprised/impressed by the number of people that do use them now - see them on lots of cars in car parks etc. Noticed them on most of the supermarket delivery vans, gas board etc too.

It's always very funny to drive around inappropriately tyred "proper" four wheel drives in what appears to be a common or garden saloon (my Alfa 159Q4) or loud hot hatch (the Lancia) . . . Less funny to watch the clown in the 2 tonne Range Rover you passed some time ago slide down the hill towards you in the rear view . . ."black ice . . .". So how did I stop then?

I towed a guy in a van up a steep hill a few years ago - I forgot he was on the back until I heard this frantic horn blowing . . . Looked in the mirror to see him going from side to side on the end of the rope - he had no directional control - I was very careful slowing down to un hitch him.

Had rental cars in Scandinavia with mild studded tyres - quite impressive when driven sensibly.

I've found winter tyres to be much better in heavy rain - much deeper tread and much more able to cope with standing water. I usually flog them on after a couple of years, or when the treads down to 5-6 mm though, which is probably close to what some new summer tyres come with.

Strange when you take them of and refit the summer wheels - suddenly turning the wheel once again gets an instant response - no waiting for the squirm in the tyre treads to catch up - takes a few miles to stop over-driving.

Around here, winter tires are made of a softer compound, and don't last much if left on in the summer.

"all season tires" are a compromise, and not a good one for winter IMHO.

Finland . . . a place where wearing all my clothes, and my pjamas, on a work trip, got me a 30 mins walk around a frozen lake by my hotel before I felt I might get frostbite . . . while Finns walked the other way in tee-shirts . . (nearly )

Depends on the annual mileage and weather, as I said the runabout that does about 5k per year has been on winters since 2023 , no excessive wear but it has been generally rather wet all year.

Hmmm . . Finger tips on the wheel, no sudden movements . . . Watched the pick up in front of Mr describe a very balletic 360 and continue on . . . Rather icey that day!

Yeah they do work - but for the few days of the year you need them - you might as well not bother.

Disagree - if you have to get to work or not be paid, the extra security they give for a few months of cold and wet is well worth it - they really do work much better in low temps, not just snow, than more usual year round tyres.

A colleague had the same opinion of not worth it, but then SWMBO read a Which article about them . . . He had them within a few days . But became a convert.

Just ran up to Niagra Falls last friday, the toll booths are gone, replaced with a bridge of overhead cameras.
I-90 in Ny state has been shutting the thruway down on very bad storms lately.

Looks like we will be getting something this weekend, mind a trip over here, just for old times ?....

I have a friend with a V-max motorcycle.

I am wondering if Yamaha did in fact use the same V-max name on their snowmobiles,
albeit with a totally different engine.

EDIT: oh looky here.....why it's a Yamaha V-max sled....
