having unloaded the better part of 100 ton of rail from 4 artic trucks today, I reckon I've earned some for my tea

I offloaded nigh-on 6000 feet of rail yesterday, if only I'd known...

Joking aside I quite often find odd lengths of rail, anything up to a yard long, and I have a couple of 2' lengths in my mancave along with a couple of 6" lengths for making into small anvils. Can't promise anything, not taking orders as it's as and when, but if I come across any I'd be happy to bring them home for collection.

A 1970-ish Ferguson radio and speakers, couple of quid from an old boy down the road. I wonder if any of today's radios will still sound great in half a century..Someone probly bought this on HP back in the days.. now it is plugged into my iPad
I always liked, as a kid, the romantic sounding stations on the tuning dials of these old radios. Hilversum,Berlin North, there was an exciting world of foreign-ness out there!

As schoolboys back in the 70's, me and my mates were all into music of various genres.

I had one of those pocket-sized transistor radios that I always took to school to listen the updated Top 10, on a Tuesday iirc?? I used to love turning the dial very slowly and listening to what was being played, and I can still recall hearing Billy Joel's superb song "My Life" very faintly on an American station. And I can vividly remember hearing Yank truckers on the cb radio when it first took off over here, sometime in the early 80's. Iirc, it was a phenomenon called "skip" that produced the effect when the radio waves bounced off the Van Allen belt in the upper atmosphere before coming back to earth. Couldn't reply to them, but you could hear them good ole boys as clear as day.

Edit: And Noel Edmunds told of how he got a rollicking when he worked for Radio Luxembourg. Apparently he read a news story about a guy who'd gone missing somewhere in Italy but was camping by a river. He cracked up when he said "...He was found washing his utensils in the Po".

CB was a big thing in California in the mid 1970's, and like you say, quite often we could hear folks on a skip, but if you had a linear amplifier like a 100 watt Palomar, you could sometimes converse with others across the continent; just don't get caught broadcasting over 5 watts.

2-way communication has always fascinated me.

CB radio, marine vhf, amateur radio, all of them. Mobile phones don't do it for me for some reason , but the mere act of talking into a microphone and getting a reply still blows my mind. Me and my ex used to regularly go out on dive trips up in Oban and I used to love shouting the Coastguard in Glasgow on channel 16 to give them the dive plan.

A Corsa van. which, given its been parked under a tree for 12 months, goes along quite well. Bit of tinkering to do, but theres no harm in that. Huge thanks the the forumite for that, and driving around the countryside.

I once found the hidden spot next to a railway bridge over the canal near Southall gas works where Railtrack had been dumping all its track off cuts, it was a cut off bit of land with no access so they could never have retrieved it. Luckily I had a canal workboat with a 28 ton hold then and " recycled " the lot into boat ballast.

A bloke came to collect a load of it wearing a dress and high heels , but that's another story.

I acquired a couple of new 5mts mig torches, one MB25 Parker for the Esab ( very nice) and a gurt MB36 Starparts ( not so nice)for one of the big Murex welders.

Bought a few weeks ago. It might be almost as old as me but it beets the **** out of the Scheppach thing I bought from Lidl a few weeks ago.

Managed to return the Lidl junk, so technically it only cost me 20 quid and a few quid for a chuck key.

To day Mr FEDEX bought me my three burner Devil -Forge gas forge from Lithuania .... well packed , easy to assemble ( can't wait to fire it up )
One of the firebricks has that many hairline cracks in it it looks like a page from the 2020 AA road map book .

I've sent an email & pictures off to Devil -Forge asking for a replacement brick . Looking forward to their package /reply as I'm reluctant to fire it us as my experience is that the brick will become a dozen smaller ones once it gets hot .

I know exactly where that was. Dads workshop was nearby.

They are also good for sharpening small twist drills and those funny pointed wood twist drills .

Noticed a severe slow-down on the write speeds of my Kingston SSDs, and googling revealed that Kingston had pulled a bit of a bait-and-switch tactic with some of their drives, sending review ones out for press testing that had far better controllers than later production. Both drives I'd bought in the past two years were suffering from this, with write speeds being as low as 35MB/s.
Kingston can go swivel as far as I'm concerned and I'll never buy anything of theirs again.
Anyway, this arrived to replace one of the Kingstons....

I see the price of good 1TB drives is coming down fast, too.
