A new oil can, I wanted one that didn't leak, a tall order I know. I have about 20, they all leak. This one can pump upside down, or at least on the tilt I believe, I'll let you know, Its Swiss, a Reilang.

Evaporust - I thought I would give it a go considering it is supposed to be virtually PH neutral. Something to do with chelates strong enough to grab hold of iron oxide but not iron itself.
So in with a rusty handle. Its supposed to last a long time, you just pour it back into the bottle until the next time you need it.

It was like this just over an hour later, probably earlier but I was on a work call. There were no visible bubbles so obviously working differently than acids.

And back on the machine after a wash and some WD40. The spots of rust is where PVA glue was on the handle, it is a wood working machine.

Conclusion, it works. Non toxic and not acidic. Probably not as cheap as citric acid but less messing about than hydrolysis. I guess time will tell how much it costs depending on how long it lasts. It's about 35 quid a gallon.
I only used the handle as an example, these will get buffed up anyway. The intention is for small parts and tools, and a small vice I have, and being non-toxic I can get the kids involved. I will tell them not to drink it mind
Cheers
Andy
That's the one I use, cheaper on Amazon and free delivery. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07JKTCZBR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1Interesting post Andy, is this the stuff?
I've seen it before and assumed it was from the school of modern weedkiller, paint stripper etc i.e junk.

Where did you order it from if you don't mind me asking Andy? I like the idea of a spiral head planer. Missed out on a nice old one a little while ago. One machine, separate planer and thicknesser, no space at the timeMy old planer thicknesser was struggling so treated myself to a new one. I didn't want another project so bought new.

It has a spiral head, indexed cutters no more setting of blades and if you nick one on a nail, just turn to a new face. I have a dozen or so spare inserts.

I put it on some machine feet to lift it up 80mm so I can move it around the workshop with the pallet truck.
I spent today doing that and generally setting it up. I had to unbolt and remove the tables to hoist it into the workshop. So had to adjust them to be coplanar and general messing about with extraction.
It's much quieter than the old one, and bigger in all respects. Finished wood is exceptional, needs virtually no sanding, even with difficult grain.
Eventually I'll buy a separate old iron planer and thicknesser, and probably fit spiral heads, but that may a few more years away.
Its Chinese made, designed in Italy. So far no real issues. The fence is very good and it's over 300kg so relatively solid construction. Cast iron tables are good quality too.
I now have no excuses for not finishing the kitchen.
Cheers
