My first 15 watt Solon electric iron was a HUGE step up when I was making crystal sets as a 9 year old. Prior to that it was a copper lump iron heated on the gas stove. My Grandfather made me a large tea tray lined with sheet zinc to stop further damage to the scrubbed pine kitchen table. That tray was also used for the Mamod steam engine with it's meths burner and my brother and I playing with WW1 candle trench lanterns complete with slit lenses.

Yesterday I visited someone who wanted a tool I no longer need.

I should look in his box of tools that he no longer needs, what I like.

This little puller looked interesting to me.

I had never seen the three identical looking legs of a puller numbered individually and uniquely:

The legs jammed, the spindle was very reluctant to turn, and the rust was also a nuisance - it got the standard treatment:

I don't know what the numbering is all about, I didn't recognize the logo either, but the way it looks and feels now, it's a pleasure to hold.

What did you do to de-rust it?

Not the electrolytic process this time, that's too much mess for just one and then such a small piece....

Instead, the right size ultrasonic bath, water, a small amount of any tensides to break up fats and a fair amount of citric acid.

The whole broth over seven or eight intervals á 30minutes, in addition the heating on 50°C and turn from time to time.

Then rinse, dry (goes quickly as hot as the part is then) and held to a rotating brush.

If you make the post-treatment quite quickly after the bath, you save the surface effects that some do not like with citric acid.

EDIT: Apply a liberal amount of oil at the end, of cause!

I have exactly the same puller, boxed and unused. It should have a short Tommy bar to turn it. The box doesn’t have a makers name but “part number 1571“ and “made in west Germany” I know this as I unearthed it this evening and was going to stick it on here for a tenner but it seemed too nice to get rid of, although I have never used it!
