These two Teng sets, as part of my apprenticeship kit. Are they any good? The ratchet feels pretty fisher price!

There great if you didnt have to buy them on apprentice wages. Supposed tobe ok quality. But I suspect like many things quality isnt what it used to be.

I do the initial setup using a 6" rule clamped to the blade with a clothspeg * & a square on the bed of the saw. I use a bit of 40x40 shs to do a test cut **, debur & check for square. You might have to tweak the blade guides by twisting them slightly to get it cutting vertically. Once that's correct I tweak the fences to get it square horizontally.
To fully test the accuracy of the saw do a cut, rotate the material 180 deg & cut off a 10mm slice. Debur & measure the thickness of the slice on the 4 sides. By rotating the bar you double any inaccuracy making it easier to measure.

* Clamp to the flat part of the blade, not the wavy cutting edge!

**Run a line in bright marker along the top of the shs to keep track of the orientation!

I've used an engineering square to set the vice back face at 90-deg (is that what you mean by "fences"?).
I've fiddled with the Guides and Tension on the blade (but as its FUBAR I'm aware it's of limited use except practice).
I've not touched the non-drive blade wheel/pulley tilt adjuster (Allen Head screw) as its not throwing the blade & its about the right point on the pulley faces - but I believe I may need to when fitting the new Tuffsaw Blade (which hopefully will come today).

I tried a test/play at 45-deg - & noted that when clamping the moving jaw has a tendency to "push" the workpiece and move it as you tighten.
All I can think of (where the cut measurement has to be spot on), is to use one of my Kennedy Clamps and clamping the piece to the bed to prevent the "push" before doing the vice up? (Or possibly use Clamps on the fixed jaw itself instead of the moving jaw?)

Teng is good stuff. I carry it on the truck. Sockets take some beating to be honest.

With all the brands there’s levels of quality between things like ratchets.

That one is ****. Sorry. But it is. They do better ones which you can buy individually.

They have a long warranty so when that one is humped they’ll give you a new one.

Having said the above if I got given that lot I’d be happy

Gedore Red or Carolus is another good brand to go for. Maybe slightly more expensive than teng.

Do you get a tool allowance at this job or a buy it and pay it off scheme?

That ratchet looks just like my 30yo Teng 3/8" one - which is still going strong. It's not got that fine an engagement (not zillions of teeth), but strong & utterly dependable.

I’ve bust a couple of them. The more ‘traditional’ shape ones (for want of a better description) seem stronger. That’s what I have now.

Unless the number of teeth is an option? Finer ratchets are always weaker. Could be my version wasn’t as coarse as yours?

They buy the lot and I pay it off. I could only ask for higher spec, otherwise you just get JBS which is the cheapest.

I’ve been using Koken Z series at home which is hex, I’ll see how I go and I may end up bringing these home and using the Koken gear at work. The carry cases with everything in them look quite handy if i wanted to nip up to the scrapyard.

I snapped a Britool one the other day. It was just worn out, last little ridge went and that was that. Big old 20t clunker.

The teng stuff is alright, pretends to be swedish designed but is bog standard Taiwanese, so pretty decent quality.
The automotive guys go mad for it so it tends to end up hideously overpriced compared to the alternatives.
Never liked their ratchets though, I think you can do so much better for them.

I think that is actually a bit of a myth to be fair - fine teeth ratchets can be, and are often stronger, in a similar way as a fine thread fastener - due in part to more surface area in contact.
However, a lot of that depends on the design of the mechanism as to how many teeth it has engaged, and also how well made it is as there is less margin for error in manufacturing. Also they need to be well sealed, as they are more sensitive to crud ingress.
So a quality fine tooth ratchet should be stronger, but a crappy one, meh, probably not so much.

Those teng ratchets... they're actually really good. They just look look and feel cheap.
I don't like them personally, but have a grudging admiration for them, they're fairly bulletproof.
The teng spanners and socketry are all like that. They feel a bit rough, but the steel is excellent quality.
