A new chuck for my Makita DHP452 Drill... Followed about 30min later by a cordless drill with a snapped spindle.
The Makita repair procedure goes:
- Remove retaining screw,
- Clamp Allen Key in chuck and unscrew,
- If unsuccessful, clamp 10mm Hex Bit in chuck and use 450Nm Impact Gun,
- If still unsuccessful, disassemble gearbox, hold rear of spindle using a Spline Socket, and use a 1m breaker bar on the chuck.
Unsurprisingly enough, that last step was too much.
Given I was only bothering to repair it because it was a gift, giving me a certain sentimental attachment to it...
I obviously now have a replacement spindle/gearbox on order, that cost more than buying a replacement on eBay (it's the drill they often sell as a kit with two batteries and a charger for less than the price of two batteries).
