Today I acquired...........

Aquired a £250 kaba padlock with no keys.

Emailed the lock manufacturer but all keys are registered to the original owners.

Now I've got to cut off £250 to save a £20 chain

cant you give it to your wife/girlfriend/partner for xmas ,to wear? My other half would be delighted if i told her i had got her a chain worth £270.

Went and picked this up today. Bloke it belongs to had put it out for the council to pick up but it hadn't been. Other bloke from the club told dad he had had a look and thought it just needed a bit of welding. We went and picked it up, you can see one of the indespension units has completely let go, the other is knackered. I'm going to replace the centre box and put on a new pair of indespension units and see if he wants it back for cost. Although he doesn't seem to at the moment so if not I'll end up with a spare wee trailer.

Blimey, that brings back memories, I still refer to long nose wiring pliers as "81's", I still have most of my hand tools from my BT days.

A friend of mine tried to find out why they were 81's he couldn't, it was lost in the passage of time. The nearest he got was it was probably left from Standard Telephones days & it was actually AT1's. Still hot a couple of pairs though

Long nosed pliers were tool number 81 in the National Telephone Company's list of tools. This was carried over into Post Office Telephones, although the official description was pliers wiring number 2.

That wuz quick! I should have said National, not Standard Telephones. As you say, Pliers wiring number 2 was the correct description in the GPO rate book (stores list)

If you feel brave you can repair the suspension units, I've done it in the past. You'll probably find that the box section is a standard size & all that's in there are 4 lengths if rubber acting on the solid centre. Split the old box to dismantle it & press the axle & rubber strips into the new box using plenty of silicon grease or fairy liquid. Weld a washer onto the end of the shaft to stop it coming out, though it will be a very tight fit!
Just remember to weld on the plate for the bolts before you assemble the unit.

It is dated 1917, war department arrow and what I can find out it was/is a boarding axe. But typical Andrew it is designed to do two jobs.

Upset the other people you are borrowing their boat.

During a tidy up i found these i got at a car boot a few months back, Spme tools are dated 1950s and
have GPO or The MOD arrow.

Those tools are similar to ones I was issued with when I joined Burroughs machines for working on adding machines and other contraptions.

You'll probably find that the box section is a standard size & all that's in there are 4 lengths if rubber acting on the solid centre. Split the old box to dismantle it & press the axle & rubber strips into the new box using plenty of silicon grease or fairy liquid. Yes I have, that is why when I re built a friends 4 foot trailer we brought new. Saved time, saved bad words. The price of rebuilding the old ones and the hubs was only a few pounds over buying the parts separately.

Why not cut the two links attached to the lock, then see if you can send the lock back to the manufacturer to get keys ?

Had a guy come to collect a LR gearbox I'd sold on eBay, pure coincidence he was driving a huge van with Teng Tools livery. Quizzed him what the warranty was on Teng Tools and turns out it's lifetime. Popped open my toolbox and gave him a broken 1/2" drive long handled ratchet and he gave me a brand new replacement

I have contacted them, they say there is a chance to cut new keys if they take it apart. Waiting to find out the cost of that. The price of the padlock suggests it won't be cheap, and I don't need a very expensive padlock.

I had a safe a few years ago which had locks by a company called "Medico". The only way I could get extra keys made was to send them the lock, which gave me a good feeling about the security issue. I have no confidence in padlocks anymore since the advent of battery operated disc cutters; the same goes for hinges, unless they have pins going into the door jamb.
