That's the one. Mine was totally as new and the glass panels were vertically spaced with paper jammed between them to stop them clanking together I guess. I found it in the basement plant room of the old home office building when I was doing some demolition there. I searched all round but I couldn't find the little box of bits that was supposed to come with it - lighting stuff and spare mantles etc.

Sadly my dad's collection of paraffin powered stuff had to go after he died as my mother had to downsize the house, it all went to the scrapman 
I remember he had various lanterns, stoves, heaters and blowlamps. They had all been used too, Tilley lanterns during power cuts, stoves for camping, heaters to stop engine blocks freezing and a blowlamp to heat up the inlet manifold on the diesel Landy in cold weather.

I just saw one of these for sale today in the window display at the Ty Hafan charity shop in Maesteg, which is a town not far away from me. Couldn't quite read the tag but I think it was £5.99 ?

Found a nice pair of pincer pliers today - Wilkinson. These make a nice match for the big 8" pliers I got last year, also Wilkinson.
I know there is a nail puller on the end, but can somebody tell me what the ball is for? It makes no sense to me at the moment.

Today actually yesterday I got
2.5 years after wanting one it's here
First quick true
It's nice now I can see the wobble on both side if the wheel I used to use a but of blutac and a cable tie and could get it quite good but this took a couple if wobbles out my racer in about 4 mins
And after the other half did not know what to buy me for xmas I said the postage is £20 buy me that for xmas I ended up with the stand for half the price they normally sell for

I’ve seen upholsters use the ball End to tuck material into corners and creases etc. Not sure if this is the official use

That's cool. I remember watching a film about upholstery, the workers poured a handful of the tacks into their mouth then spat them out one at a time to knock them in. It was from the 1950s so things may have changed a little since then...

The Blow Lamp Society web pages tell me that the Model 543 was made in 1962 and originally came with a plastic or metal handle. This was upgraded in the same year and became the 543 N and was fitted with the open type metal handle like the one in the picture.
So I guess this is quite modern as far as lamps go.
It was missing the plunger and the man in the shop was desperate to make a sale so he swapped one over from a battered blow torch. It fits perfectly but the cup washer is knackered. These are easy enough to buy, but of a clean and polish and I’m good to go

I've often wondered myself what purpose the ball end served and just presumed that it was on the end of the handle that you chose to have nearest your palm?
An old catalogue from RCF Tools (summer 1976) lists 'Carpenter's Ball and Claw Pincers' in three sizes (6", 7" and 8") by two different makers (Elliott Lucas and Taurus). The illustration in the catalogue is of a Tower pattern, and the description states, "Designed for removing nails with a 'rolling' action. Incorporates tough gripping jaws, a well formed claw for tack lifting and ball ends for swaging."
Swaging?. Now, I can't think of a woodworking or shoe repairing operation or task that involves swaging, so maybe it's for another trade? One thing I associate swaging with (apart from blacksmithing) is working the end of a piece of pipe or tube to increase or reduce its diameter, perhaps to allow one piece of pipe to slip into another but in the case of the average pincers it would have to be a fairly small diameter pipe, so maybe not that?
Looking at the examples of Roman pincers above, it seems example C has a ball end to one handle, so maybe the Romans had a particular use for it and manufacturers since have simply presumed everyone else must have.
