I made an effort to drop heavy hints at what tools I want to avoid getting too many bottles of aftershave I will never use for Xmas/birthday etc. and when I did a trawl of various tool sites to send the list of links to the missus, this screwdriver came up. I was looking for tools between ten and twenty quid, I had some more useful tools on the list but I guess this appeals to the gift buyer more than a chainsaw chain sharpening file guide or a box of slitting discs
It worked, I still have a box of tat but it is much reduced than previous years. I think the secret is to be very specific so they know exactly what to buy i.e. if there are any options on size, voltage etc. and anything else that allows the gift buyer to buy it as easily as non-tool based present AKA tat
It sounds mercenary but I'm sure the pressie buyer would rather you enjoyed the pressie. Beer and spirits are not classed as tat even though they are not tools. Joke jumpers or T-shirts, fart extinguishers, slippers, joke cone for the bog with "leave it 10 minutes" on it come into the "tat" category

Nah, a new ironing board cover, really says something.
I keep one of those rawlplug hand punches with my masonry drills. When drilling concrete blocks you sometimes hit a hard piece of stone that the cordless hammer drill bounces off. 
A few thumps with the rawl punch & hammer is enough to break the stone & the drill sails through!
