It depends on how you intend to use it. If the main speed changes will still be done via the lathes gearing then the original size should be fine. If you intend to use the vfd solely for speed control control then double or more the original would be better to compensate for lost torque.
I have a similar looking box with the battery back up in that does LED lighting and it kicks in if power goes off, Quite useful if you are in the shower or half way downstairs in the dark.View attachment 127814
3 12/24dc power supplies. Brand new old stock.
They are great for electrolyse de rust. that's me set for a while.
Also good for charging Sealed lead acid batteries, as they have a battery back up.
Original motor speed would have been 940rpm too so perhaps the 2hp would be a better option even using the original gearing to get me closer to stock speeds and allow me some variation. Plain bearings/bushings on it. Unless im lucky and find a 940rpm 240v 3p motor easily.. im not that lucky atm lol
typical original fitting would have been a 3-phase, 3/4 h.p. Thomson-Houston 940 r.p.m. unit equipped with a 3-speed flat-belt pulley driving direct to the spindle to give nominal speeds of 411, 787 and 1432 r.p.m in open drive and through the 5 : 1 ratio backgear of approximately 82, 157 & 286 r.p.m. Some models are believed to have been fitted with a 3-speed gearbox in the cabinet base, in which case the number of speeds totalled 12, through with a very similar span from slowest to fastest.
Appreciate you looking boss. You can get 6 pole motors which will be about the 900rpm, the ones I have are actually just 0.55Kw so 3/4hp but are 4 pole so 1400rpm or so.
I will see if I have any others, I know I used to have a 6 pole kicking about but can't recall seeing it for a while so it may have been used on something that I no longer have.
Should be easy enough to make a sleeve or extension shaft or whatever required if you have a lathe
A nice Benson Verniers Ltd. trammel and 2 packets of Abra files - £20
It's a pity some muppet had used pliers to undo the non-turning collar on one of the extension arms. Still, if I emer need to scribe a 6 foot diameter circle I;ve the tool to do it now.
Here is the rest of todays finds.
