Is that an Eclipse demagnetiser in the middle of the pic ? looks similar to our larger one.
Very handy when working with mag chucks, for years before we got one my dad the innards of a old motor on the end of the bench running on a low volt supply, you just passed bits through where the armature use to go.Worked fine for years.

@The_Yellow_Ardvark. The little welder fellow turned up today, He is destined to stand on a cake soon for my mates dad, 70 years young and still working full time as a fabricator..
This weeks auction finds.
A steel cupboard with 3 adjustable shelves, 5' h x 2' w x 16" d.
There's a nice brass plate on the back with 'Vickers & Armstrong's Engineering Ltd 1957' , probably ex services use, probably bomb proof too as it is made from 1/8" steel plate! Cost me £30 so not too cheap but it will make a good strong tool cupboard!
Nearly a full roll of 25mm plastic coated galvanised flexible conduit. £5
A clarke copy of the Hazet assistant collapsible tool trolley. Not as well made as the original, the brackets for the uprights need welding on this one.
It all collapses down neatly to fit into your boot. The original was used in VW dealers workshops & the VW show n shine scene like to use them for displays. An original Hazet one is $1300, this copy - £4!

Yep, not had a chance to test it yet, was PAT tested about 3 years ago according to sticker so should be OK but will give the connections a once over before I fire it up

Ref Post 7003. Page 351.
As it was on Boxing day, a quick play showed it did move, but was very stiff. Something was not right.
The strip down showed that some one had tried to "Restore and fix it". 100% bodge job.
The stiff movement was due to this.
1. Pinch bolt, lower left was seized and clamping the lower spindle shaft. Plus it was the wrong thread.
2. Above the lower gear you will see to bearing cups. Only 2 bearings, so the had canted over and were rubbing against the shaft.
3. The grub screw is slotted so it engages with the slot on the upper shaft it had bean forced rounds and was locked hard against the shaft grove.
But, time was my friend.
A Box of bits.
Apart from new bearings the only new part was the crank handle.
The handle bolt was bent, easy fix. But the handle had spilt and worn the central hole oval. The spilt had bean filled with resin and the lot painted over.
So a new handle was "found" in one of my box's and turned down to match the original. Finished with bees wax..
The paint, 3 different shades of red, the body parts had 4 different colours on it, so the lot went. Boiled up in hot caustic. No images of that as that was a "Heath Robinson" set up. Looked, dangerous but was safe.
Today was rebuild day. So coffee pot on, Blue milk, radio and heat. Away I went.
First 3 parts, went well. The paint finish is a colour I liked. The old was striped, dings and dents carefully removed. But leaving the history. Brush primmer then 4 coats off rattle can paint. Finished with satin rattle can lacquer. The bare metal parts were cleaned and clear coated as well.
Finally.

To the member who PM'd me saying I don't use the stuff I get and implying I was not being 100% honest.
If you look below you can see the Whit. 1/4" tap in use with the tap wrench I got last year.
Plus if you look on the second from last image on the post above, you can see the gas set I got as well.
So shove that in your pipe and smoke it.

My sentiments exactly, anything else is plain jealousy. Also if you didn't recover something and refurbish it, it would no doubt go to scrap or landfill. The same as the bass guitar I refurbished this week. One persons waste is another's gold.

The ability to see something you like in a big pile of rubbish is an art form, Its also cheaper ... We needed a table for Christmas dinner..did i go to oak furniture land as advertised on TV? No i went to 5 scaffold planks land..they were new but stored and got a orbital sanding and quick drying ronseal, Seated 12 with room to spare.

Very true. It's actually a talent, being able to look at some abandoned, neglected or rusted piece and see what it could be, rather than what it just currently is. How many people would, and do, consign things to the scrap or bin when possibilities for them still exist.
Simple motto: If you're happy with your choices, sod what others think.

The chuck was a bonus.
Found in the Copper pile in my local scrap yard.
Found its way into my van.
I had a quick wiz with a wire brush in a 4.5" grinder.
A 1930 Merx Self heating soldering Iron, Ok minus the handle,, small details.
Was used by the GPO engineers to solder over head lines.

That will be a fine tool not many people can tin a bolt let alone use one

There it is.
Cleaned up, replacement handle fitted. Plus the tip was re tinned.
Ok, I may of cheated a bit in heating it up. Gas torch. But To maintain the heat and save expensive gas a few small chunks of charcoal.
Ok, the purist will say I should of got an original handle. But I didn't. My tool. My rules.
Beside I enjoyed modifying the of the shelf handle.
