It is a tool what may not be used, but it can be used. I do not seeing good tools in a state were they can not be used.

One thing I enjoy at Men In Sheds is restoring to use the tools we get.
Some are to far done, but may yield spares. But some do come back to life, then they get used.

The other day an older member was showing a younger member how to use a wood plane.

i had the copper tinners but used them when i was 16 i had hold of some model books and in it had a metal boat to be made the editions even had the re control instructions within the books and much more

i had tinned a boat build, but upon leaving i knew the teacher really well and he realy did like the books and asked to keep them there longer as he was reading through them with interest

in end i never completed the boat but was 3/4 done on the build, however i did gift it to the school and also the books to the metal work teacher

I acquired a big linear actuator:

It rises about sixteen inches with a force of 2000 Newtons, the two top sections go down flush with the bottom section.


Only picture I took of the gizzards so I'll try to explain: The mid section bolts to this which rises up on a big leadscrew and as it does the top section is pulled out by the chain. There's also a cable in it to pull it back down and keep tension on the chain, it's all very fiddly and takes real Meccano fingers to assemble it. It's very well made though, I can see where the £400 price tag comes from.

Today I acquired this single phase motor /gearbox assy from my father in laws Ham radio mast. He passed away 3 months back and this mast consisted of an 8x4 H section and 4x4 box section upright, which he installed way back around 1979. It was certainly built to last!
This thing was starting to show its age though and my BIL was concerned it would come down onto the house in the bad weather so down it came today. We strapped it all up and replaced the hinge bolts with stud bar then verified the motor would still turn after 20 years lack of use, then we lowered it down on the motor assy.

I'll give the man his dues,he knew his stuff and brought out the cores from inside the motor and rigged up a switch assy to run it up and down.

So I now have the 4x4 as a garage door lintel and the H section and motor/gearbox for a log splitter. Watch this space.

Had a chance to go out in the workshop and clean a couple of the bits I picked up last week. Used the Mercer comparator stand to check the squareness of the two cylindrical squares. The thinner one is showing a 5 tenths error over 6" which isn't bad, but the fat one is absolutely bang on.

Using the 4 points method, repeated at top and bottom of cylinder and not even a 1 tenth (.0001") error over 5" - I'm super chuffed as I wanted a good cylindrical square to help when I scrape in some of the right angle squares and box's.

I have only used it to test i I thought it would have decent power but it took the wheel nut off my van on the lowest setting.

once you have used a conductance tester you will never want to go back to the old crude drop testers

The swept frequency ones are incredibly accurate but way outside of my (home) budget.

I acquired a 6/12/24v 40 amp starter charger off myself , got it cheap about fifteen years ago from our factors because it had no wheels or handle in the box and completely forgot I had it . Twas unearthed the other day among loads of other things I forgot I had
