Yes, a coil winder. I had never seen one before so made it similar to a lathe however I don't think I had much option as it had to be capable of winding coils from 15mm long onto 1mm Dia Mu core to 500mm long on 50mm dia iron tube core.

That reminded me, my lathe came from an electrical workshop that rewound electrical motors (and other stuff)... I wonder if they used it for winding electrical wire or what use did they have for it...

Could probably be used for fishing spools too.

Anything that fits within the work area can be wound, I have done small 1/2KG spools of Aluminium for the spool gun on it.

They may have done but likely they would have used it for things such as commutators.

It can be done if guiding the wire by hand, otherwise you need some means of accurately guiding the wire in both directions whilst sync'd to the spindle.

Not really unless you can reverse the feed quickly when you get to either extent of the coil.

more like they couldnt afford what we afford these days so a lot of skill and ingenuity and damn right crazy ideas but got things done and created many skills in doing so

True but there can not be many folk that would even contemplate boring an Austin seven engine block or building a four stroke engine from scratch on a 3 1/2 inch centre lathe these days.

A mate of mine gave me his gurt grinder and standby 12kva generator today, he never used either ,needed the space and could not be bothered with trying to find a buyer.

Not sure, the freezers failed. So it all selfcured. I was thinking decorative stuff. It could be glued to a backing sheet and then epoxy over

Found a virtually new hedge trimmer in a skip. It had a 0.5m mains cable and no plug. I also found a 2.5m length of mains cable with a plug attached in the same skip. Had to provide my own 13A fuse.
