That vice is cool, I saw one like that at the old ICI factory near Huddersfield few years back, even posted a pic on here, I think?

Please educate me, what do you mean when you say 11” swing?

So, my lathe has 5” from centre of chuck to bed, does that make it 10” swing?

Yup. It will swing a 10"bar
Sorry re chuck. Its just been snapped up. Been on the forum sale page since feb lol. Have another 6" cant remember if 3 or 4 jaw mind. Not sure how many I have now. Keep finding chucks with rhe right backplate and keep buying them lol.

I half heartedly said yes then changed my mind and couldn’t delete the list.

I’m really after a 3 jaw first, where I can reverse the jaws.

3 jaw independent will allow reversing jaws. 3 jaw self centering requires inside and outside jaws due to the scroll.

A good three jaw should have two sets of jaws. Mine had two sets and a single, bonus jaw which I found in the suds tank!

3 jaw independent will allow reversing jaws. 3 jaw self centering requires inside and outside jaws due to the scroll.

And if your gonna go independent may as well be a 4 jaw. More versatile.

Not very common the 3 Jaw independent, don't think I have ever seen one in the flesh, much better to get a 4 jaw in most cases anyway.

If you want a 3jaw self centring chuck you can get them with 2 part jaws, to reverse you unbolt the top half and turn them round. Also handy for using with soft top jaws.
Or you could find a Forkard F type chuck, I have one and I love it.

All sounding complicated now, most of my stuff that I do is simple tinkering around so 3 jaw self centring is best for me most of the time, which I have

4 jaw sounds like a useful addition for my needs

I may have some as I have a heap of jaws in a drawer but likely they are for bigger chucks.

Lucky you! All my dad had was a screwdriver set and one hammer, a tape measure and a drawer full of Swiss Army knives

I’ve got more tools than you can shake a stick at, all high quality top makes. If only I could use them properly

Swing is the American way of classing lathe size. Whereas we state the centre height, they quote the maximum diameter it'll turn. It makes things sound bigger.
