Today I read about a young lad preparing his car for an MOT.

He used a jack on some wheels and a block of wood

It all collapsed and he was found several hours later, dead

Very very sad news, I always tell younger car guys about using jacks to lift cars then working under them, 5 minutes of preparation for working under a car can save days in hospital and a life time of damage, being young can often make you unaware of danger.

Today I acquired.
This 8.5 inch Taylor chuck. She in great condition. It will make the finishing touches to my empire lathe. I will be doing a short thread of how they come apart and the internals

Found this yesterday in a roof space.
Had been there for a long time. It was thick in spiders webs and their remains.

What to do with it.?

Apologies for the photo quality. Scrapped a nursing bed at work, so kept the foot & headboard ends, along with the actuators, control unit & remote. Thought it might have the makings of a height adjustable bench or suchlike.

No power tools were used to clean this hammer up.



Head off, drilled through with a hand drill and then punched out.
@slim_boy_fat Yes the shaft was dead. The shaft had a split from just below the head for 50mm.

There you can see the state of the rust and the shaft hole being cleaned up.




The head is 3lb and you can see it does clean up well with, wire brush, files and emery cloth.




Wedged with a beech wedge and I left the shaft recessed a bit as I wanted to try and flood it with a epoxy Shaft fitting kit I have from America.



I will not be using it again.
Yes it does the job, but I m not impressed with it.

Apart from the glue I used I like how it all came together. A nice treat to not to use power tools.

Right, now to the real acquisitions. Met a chap a little bit along the street and stopped to blether. He said "Oh, I'm glad you stopped, I found a couple of things while looking for something else and thought you might find a use for them, being into metalwork an' all. [He's into woodworking].

So, we have exhibit A [I know what it's for but do any of you]. It belonged to his Dad who ran a local garage until he retired, and is no longer with us. The name "M Brown" is stamped on the underside, so it might be an Apprentice/student test piece. That wasn't his Dad's name.






And exhibit B: Neither of us know what it is/is for. It's very heavy for it's size so possibly cast steel or iron, not done any magnet, file or spark test on it - in truth I'm reluctant to and I'm not even sure I'd know how to exactly decipher the results [I know a little ]. Clearly for clamping something, but what? No markings on it either.







Apologies for the poor pics, not up to standard, but at least I remembered the mug and I'm sure you'll get the idea.

Why my work bench is not tidied, still.

Ages ago I got two nice little bull nose planes. They were in good condition.
Untill.
I dropped one, trying not to sneeze up a ladder.
I found a hidden nail in a piece off wood I was planning to fix the window frame I was working on when I dropped the first.
Many bad words were uttered. Not under my breath.

So I fixed them up.
But.



I had to make a jig to allow me to bend the nose of the one on the left back to the correct position.
Make a jig to hold both blades as I re ground them and Honed them on an oil stone.

Then.



I repaired an old over, small work top unit so I could heat them up and try stove enamelling.
It worked.
But the oven is no longer an oven.
It died. You fix one issue and the fault moves along to next weal point.
But the metal sides are recycled into fire pit edges to help concentrate the heat for my "TYA Alloy Can Melter" (Patient applied)



Good now I can get on with the tidy up.
I made a start, But due to a badly timed shove of a vice. Record vice I just repaired, see my post on that.
I mullared the leg and support of my temporary tool box stand ( only 10 months temp stand)
I needed a support.
So I fixed up a bottle jack I acquired.



I hoped it just needed a fresh coat of paint.
No, full strip down, new seals, fresh oil and a pressure relief spring.



So back to sorting out.
No, last night was beer, boobs(Not mine) a sledge hammer, a wooden mallet and beer.

So today?
Ish.
Mr Slim Boy Fat sent me 3 Tenon saws.
I made a start and made coffee.

Good.

So, it was then time for MIS.
No.
Go there via Charity shop, see this. Pay good money to find out it is dead.



Blown 3 amp fuse. I wonder why? 1500 watt motor.

So fix that, still doesn't work.
One safety micro switch is dead.
Go home, remove one from a dead Fire alarm call point. Fit it and away we go?
No.
Motor blows the fuse, but not the cut out.
Cut out is dead. New one on order. The motor drive was very stiff. So out, strip clean and refit, then it worked.

Go home, yes.
Try my new to me Avo.
It is a "Pup", bean sold a defective unit. E bay complaint has bean filled.




Any one guess what is wrong?

I am going to strip it down and see what's wrong and were that ring goes.

So a busy day , done a lot and it doesn't show

Watch out for the heads on those. They can be damn nearly glass hard. I had a chunk of one trash a pair of (non-safety) glasses a few years back.
Been a bit more circumspect about a) cheap striking tools and b) safety glasses ever since...

Stumbled upon this at a local boot sale.

American Tap and Die company. Couple of bits missing.

Key and car fob for scale.

Matt what is the smallest tap & smallest die in the set ?

Am I to take it, it's all true good old Uncle Sams ANF & not unified fine ?
I'm after getting one true 1/8 ANF & one 3/16 ANF bits of thread about 1/2 " long ( don't know the TPI but it must be very very close to an ISO thread

I seem to think there is a slight difference between the two names as I have recently purchased ten supposedly 1/8" and 10 supposedly 3/16" unf head less Allen set screws that just don't fit the hole in the 1943 American made lathe I have.
However an electrical ISO 240 volt electrical socket face plate screw does screw fit one of the holes well, but it is a tiny bit too sloppy for me to rely on it holding .
