I'd give it a spray of WD 40 down the pot and pull it over four or five times without the plug in to get some lube on the cylinder walls. so the rings stop scratching the dry walls . I'd put a sacrificial new oil in it as well before starting it up as the old oil may have a lot of crap settled down at the oil pickup / splash spur , if you can stop that crud being agitated it's a good idea.

They were a really nice machine , if you need to take the cylinder head off , see if you can get a gasket first off as they often tear apart no matter how careful & skilled you are.

I was going to run some oil down the plug and leave it to soak while I cleaned out the carb and changed the oil, but might go with your suggestion.

Fresh petrol and we'll see where ewe are then. She'll need at the best back-lapping, at worst a regrind of the reel and sole plate.

Well picked her up and gave her a quick clean, made some improvement

Plug out and WD-40, then light oil dribbled into cylinder. I also brought home this which the Seller had lying in his shed - for the princely sum of £10. New, unused and in a tatty box

According to eBay search, they fetch anything from £30/£40 [ongoing auctions for used] to £99 for new Buy-It-Now.

Don't suppose anyone has an Owner's Manual for one lying about? Or know which oil I should use when I change it. I have fully synthetic aplenty.

I'd hazard a guess at sae30 monograde, most 4 stroke air-cooled things specify that.

that'll be splash lube, the book usally says sae 30. tho all the littel engines here get 10/40w or 15/40w and they seem to do allright on it

It works only thing I put specific oil in is the bike as I don't fancy it nipping up at stupido rpm. Landy has engine tolerances you could walk through tho so it gets whatever is free and near enough

hell no, the oil that goes in the vehicels is way to expensive for littel chug chugs. they get whatever goes in tractor. ( the old golf lives on 5/50w fully synth £ouch and everything else car wise is 5/30w fully synth )

I sold my lathe for the second time after an eBay technical problem and a doon brain who thought I would deliver it to Plymouth for free.....

I then sold it to a local guy who wanted it taken to his house and down into his cellar. After setting it all up for him he decides it has no sacrificial gear and it's no good to him without one. So I offer to get him one and collect his money later in the week....I then get a text at 10.31 saying he no longer wants it as he has changed his mind.....what a =%_€£¥

G9d knows mate....he was anal beyond belief. But I have had enough now I am going to strip the lathe and sell it in pieces. Fed up of talking to dreamers and nutters.

You really do know how to find them. I'd be giving the plonker a large piece of your mind once you get that lathe out of there and safely into your vehicle. I wouldn't be stripping it though, just due to a couple of arseholes. Specify cash on collection and collection only the next time. Once they've paid, (and get the money before they load it into their vehicle or trailer), it's out of your hands.
