Today I acquired...........

Picked up 2 lucas swing lifts today from one of my mooching grounds...not the actual but identical to this,going to put one on my cabstar truck.

A lift something like that for the landrover is on the round tuit list, although I can't decide between one in the loadbed or an external removable one that fits on the hitch. I think the latter would be easier to fit.

was nice and cheap on ebay, and is in fantastic condition :-o
(built in September 1957 according to data plate thing...... I think)

I'd love to read a thread on how you move it. I shifted a much smaller lathe once and it was a bit of an ordeal.

I operated a few of those when I was an apprentice and found them to be a really good machine.

originally it was supposed to be picked up by a hiab and brought to me... but it was in a small room behind an engineering shop with only a mud road for access so hiab couldn't get in

turned up with a trailer, it was supposed to be outside ready with a forklift organised but got there and it was still inside and no forklift... owner wasn't happy and wanted to cancel sale but I talked him around, said my mate and I would do all the work. Jacked it up with a forklift jack and got skates underneath and then managed to moved it 12ft inch by inch with pry bars under it, got it half out the door.

then went to see a company down the street, got ok from the boss there and then offered forklift driver £20 lift it onto trailer... but forklift couldn't get in to lift from the side and couldn't lift it from the end.. so had forklift lift one end, jacked other end up onto a small trolley and pulled it along with forklift.... finally forklift could get around the side and (only just) managed to lift it from above with chains

had to back trailer up to it, drop lathe on, then drive out and pick it up again to turn it around (so weight was at front of trailer)

that forklift was 3ton and struggled... mine is only rated 1ton (lifts 2ton no problem in use) but getting it off with mine was tricky, took the forklift, an engine hoise, a trolley jack, a bottle jack, a fork extension, a pile of pallets, 2 spare tyres, 2 guys standing on the back of the forklift to try and balance it out... and then a lot of hassle.... got it done in the end tho


this is the access (after we got it out of the white roller shutter behind it)

a 7.5ton hiab would have been able to get close, but I couldn't fine one who could lift it from the back end of the truck (track was just under 3m wide with tight bend at end)


this is it strapped to the trailer about to head home

got there to collect at 9am, took till about 5pm to load it, and we're used to hard work so we wern't hanging about

Now go buy a ML7, chuck it in the 4 jaw and turn it into a unimat

wired it up today, cleaned it up a bit, gave it a spin... I can do speeds + forwards/reverse but that's about it :-o

Ok it wasn't free but didn't think it was bad for £50 and it was only a couple of miles away, its the 25 ton rating, now to wait till a ram/bottle jack comes along ...
