Yes the machine mart bottles are a rip off!
I have a Hobbyweld bottle at the moment - 20l of 5% Argon CO2 which seems perfect for sheet metal.

Check before you buy a reg! My Bottle comes with a regulator!!!
The gave me a connector for it with the deposit. It looks a bit rubbish but I've had no problems.
It is a bit annoying as I have some normal bottle too but it won't be a problem if you only use one type of gas. Oh and the green plastic top likes to fall off and trap your fingers when you're moving it around!!

The prices you quoted don't seem too bad. As others mention I'd be tempted to go for 20 litre as the deposit won't be too much more and the gas will be far cheaper per litre. You will most likely get through it.
Don't lose the deposit slip.

not at the moment, i went to machine mart and bought 2 x 1ltr bottles, hobby weld want £168 for the 1st 10 ltr bottle then just swap as needed for £55 per refill, if my son is unable to get a full bottle of camp then it will have to be hobbyweld. even then i am not sure what regulater i would need for pub gas, regarding hobbyweld the cost of a regulater is as yet unknown.

try the local garden centre up there if they are gas cert they will sell it,i get mine in Stirling

you buy the argon co2 mix bottle and get it refilled,you have to rent the co2 bottle,thats a lot cheaper

I warned you, you will be gasless migging before you know it.
Hunt around for a pub gas bottle or bite the bullet.

seems to be the way of life now, i did the nc500 last year on the bikes with my son, a few places are card ony then got to ullapool to find the whole place was card only. we ordered a meal then they wanted a card, we offered cash lol, they called the police on us for refusing to pay, countrys going to the dogs.

i have 2 dials on the regulator, does one show what the bottle level is? no idea what the second one is supposed to show?

On mine its cylinder pressure (bar) and flow (l per min)...the adjuster is for flow.

That shows bottle pressure and outlet pressure (if the outlet is restricted/shut off).
A flow meter will show flow, usually a vertical type with flow control.

Really? How does a pressure gauge measure flow?
Yes I know it can, by measuring a pressure drop across a restriction, but I’ve never seen a reg do this. It might infer it, by inferring more pressure equals more flow, but much depends on the torch and pipe work restrictions.

Look at the left gauge, it is in l/min. Pretty standard.

Make sure you always turn off the cylinder tap when not welding and especially overnight. A small leak can be costly. It's a real kick in the nuts to find an empty cylinder the day after buying it.

Do you have the hose and adapter to connect the welder to the regulator?

I bought the regulator, hose and adaptor at Clarik in Dunfermline.

Still wouldn’t trust it to read flow accurately though, for the reasons I outlined above.

I have what used to be termed a rotameter flow gauge and restrictor, tagged onto the reg. only on tig though, mig is not so fussy, I listen to it...

No idea how it does it but both my regulators have cylinder pressure and flow rate...might be the venturi effect that drives the flow gauge maybe but I'd be guessing without cutting one open.
