Yes the machine mart bottles are a rip off!
I have a Hobbyweld bottle at the moment - 20l of 5% Argon CO2 which seems perfect for sheet metal.
Check before you buy a reg! My Bottle comes with a regulator!!!
The gave me a connector for it with the deposit. It looks a bit rubbish but I've had no problems.
It is a bit annoying as I have some normal bottle too but it won't be a problem if you only use one type of gas. Oh and the green plastic top likes to fall off and trap your fingers when you're moving it around!!
The prices you quoted don't seem too bad. As others mention I'd be tempted to go for 20 litre as the deposit won't be too much more and the gas will be far cheaper per litre. You will most likely get through it.
Don't lose the deposit slip.
