I look after some generators at a place that runs it.

For them it really works. I think if you use the good bits and use it in the right place then it’s handy.

They don’t have a massive central toolbox. They have a few tools near where they get used. No point having 8-24 spanners if the machine only uses 13, 17 and 19 for instance.

Like all these things it gets taken too far then unravels.

As far as thread goes, I hate mess. I dislike untidy workshops. I work in a couple that are just like a junk shop but with broken lorries in.

My own workshop is beyond where I like it to be. It’s an embarrassment at the moment. I’ve got everything everywhere while I’ve got some re wiring happening. It’s taking far longer than I anticipated and it’s doing my head in!!

Thanks for explaining what 5S is. I've just applied it to my 3D printing area. Not perfect but everything in one place. I like it, might reorganize some other areas into "workstations" too.

That’s what I’ve tried to cherry pick from it. All the machines and ‘stations’ have the correct tools. Saves a lot of to and fro to be honest.

Still got the big toolbox at one end which serves its own purpose but all the routine stuff is where it’s needed

I probably have half a dozen of the same hand tools. The idea was I kept a set in the car, one in the shed, stable, garage etc. Can't seem to do it. Just looked in my leccy tool bag, two pairs of pliers, two 5 holes, 4 side cutters.....why?

I have duplicate and triplicates of most tools, and also over fortyplicates of vices.

I have the contents of a tidy 30ft X 30ft workshop. Unfortunately it's all in a 24 X 14 workshop.

Pigeon holed tool boxes can help keep things tidy, example of this is the rivets or tyre repair gear. The rivet box may be needed anywhere on the yard or in the workshop, I have put everything in the rivet box including the rivets with the correct size drills and all of the rivet guns, so the op of riveting only needs that box and that’s where it will all be.Same with the puncture gear, it’s all in there.

Did a normal human actually write that ......stuf. What is the definition of a CI guru?I was tempted to follow the rules but unfortunately couldn't find my roll of tape so gave up. I've just worked out that if I use 1/2 " wide tape I would need another 93 sq feet of floor /wall space .

Is the 5S similar to The Honda Way

It was an attempt to drag / bribe dealers into the 20th century. one of my responsibilities in the late 70's was to try to maintain the 5 Star standards but it was an uphill task . As usual it was only partially thought through and not well implemented . Typical example was the mandatory purchase of the diagnostic station . I estimate that in the 20 years of visiting the dealer I never once saw a dealer actually using it other than a convenient place to park your cup of coffee. Perhaps a few did but not in my presence. I did have a giggle one morning listening to a program on the car raio about the effect of colours in the workplace .Red was deemed dangerous in the workshop . Guess what the mandatory colour was for 5star. Never mind I'm sure that someone made a few quid out of it. No names no pack drill.

I think that at night the tools all have a bit of a doo then don't remember the way to their own beds . I've got 2 sets of hand tools ,one at ether end of the garage /workshop plus another set in my workroom in the spare bedroom. They always end up clustered together .

I have my best tools at home. Down the boat shed at the club i have a duplicate set of tools that i leave there, these are more battered ones that i wouldnt miss if some scrote nicked them. Sods law dictates that the one tool i really cannot do without i will have left behind on that day. Fortunately i live less than a mile from the club.
But when im on full on boat project work i have to heave heavy toolbags in & out of my car every night & morning. I darent leave them in the car on the driveway or in the boat shed itself.
In reality the teak & honduras mahogany timber i have on the racks is worth many times what the tools would be but not as easily converted into crack or charlie!

Once i had a 1500sq ft workshop on a farm, plenty of space for all my machines & gear with good storage.
But with the downturn in the boat trade i had to pack it in 20 odd years ago. Now everything has to fit in an extended double garage.
Space is the luxury we all need but unfortunately a lot of it costs!

My workshop in the Philippines was getting rather packed, with 2 car projects, a bike, and several furniture builds going on. Even the walls were full....

No, something that was knocked up locally in the Phils. There were 3 or 4 of them made.

Taps and dies, each have there own drawer bsw, bsf, unc, metric etc. Its all very sad Then theirs high speed steel blanks and solid tip tooling, Reamers, endmills.

Just got moved back to England and moved into parents old house. 6 x 3m garage, just going to start converting into workshop. That should be fun. Got to put up a carport for the Morris 8 and a shed to put my bikes in + all the garden stuff. Unfortunately I don't get my tools etc for another 3 months. At least it will give me chance to get garage roof insulated and some more lights in.

Way back in 2006 my workshop/garage looked like this (it was posted on my website - still is, if you know where to look!):

One day I got an email from a publishing house that was looking for images to use to illustrate a new school book - particularly the bit on workshop safety!
I gave them permission to use it but I've no idea if it ever made it into a 'how many fatal accidents waiting to happen can you spot' page

Er... the passage of time hasn't been kind; if anything it's probably worse now. Although the TIG set lives in the back bedroom, while the Lotus and Rover engine parts were sold some time ago. The gas space heater hiding behind the cabinet at left was also sold as it made everything rust. The Boxford AUD was replaced by a VSL about a year later... but I bet if I went out there now I could take almost the exact same photo
