Is the 5S similar to The Honda Way

I need to do a 5C (or 5S) on the workshop. but It involves pulling everything out, cleaning and then sorting and putting everything back. That will take a couple of days on my own. The only space I have is the drive in front. If I do this, the scrotes will have a field day! The alternative, is to hire a Luton van, put everything in there, But that will cost a couple of Hundred quid.

You will never be able to find anything again .

Is it the case that the people with the tidiest workshops also have the larger workshops? I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions, but I think I may be seeing a correlation.

One place I worked had the 5S system which had good and bad points.

All the cupboards and shelving units were marked up and lists of contents stuck on them with part numbers and minimum stock levels.

Then one of the bad points was when an engineer came in for some castors we had in the container outside but as we hadn't used any for years the boss had skipped them a few months before so the engineer had to buy new ones.

Irrespective of size its easier to keep a workshop tidy/useable if its not also used for storage.

That's my issue, I use the garage as both.

Spare engines are hard to store! I also have a 5L V8 spare and about 8x transmissions. 100s of other MB parts too. Full sets of doors etc. For my own cars

I'm afraid that if ever my workshop were that tidy I would still have no problem mislaying tools. It would take me 10 minutes to find the dustpan for a start.

Mine is all sorted now . Space is my big problem .
That being said I have more than many people .
I am trying to finish that jet engine for the NEC next week .
Once it gets to the point that i am constantly looking for a tool (usually my vernier)
I just walk away .

That's where lean morphs into stupidity.

It's all part of the 6 sigma rigmarole - It all works brilliantly until management get hold of it! 5S ALWAYS fails on the 5th element - Sustain, because you're never given any time to maintain it. It's a mindset, NOT a one-off exercise - We don't do it right unless it's a Japanese company in the UK

20 years ago I undertook a project to repair and resurrect the automatic dissolved oxygen controls at one of the major sewage works in our company, place called Afan.
I had all the neglected, out in the weather DO meters replaced, calibrated etc, set the process into auto control. This was when I found the control philosophy didn't match what the code actually did. So bit by bit I fixed it, got it working, showed £20k a year saving in power costs. Then I left that part of the business. Llater I found out that the business had closed the contract of the tech whose job it was to maintain the DO meters, he was costing £30 k a year, but only needed 12 days a year to maintain this kit...
So it all failed...
Scroll on 20 years, and we are doing it all again. This is British management at its best, the worst - you don't want to know.

I feel your pain. In my case its Peugeot GTI engines, I think I have 5 plus several gearboxes,. Also crates of ancilliaries, brake bits, trim & a mountain of spare panels.
Those plastic trolleys are great for engines aren't they.

My daughters wendy house doesn't get used anymore, shes 24 now. So I use that to store stuff that may come in useful one day.

Once i had a 1500sq ft workshop on a farm, plenty of space for all my machines & gear with good storage.
But with the downturn in the boat trade i had to pack it in 20 odd years ago. Now everything has to fit in an extended double garage.
Space is the luxury we all need but unfortunately a lot of it costs!
