I look after some generators at a place that runs it.

For them it really works. I think if you use the good bits and use it in the right place then it’s handy.

They don’t have a massive central toolbox. They have a few tools near where they get used. No point having 8-24 spanners if the machine only uses 13, 17 and 19 for instance.

Like all these things it gets taken too far then unravels.

A Japanese supplier invited me in for a tour, was a great company but a bit too rigid for me

They had as you said the most common tools used near each station. It makes sense but unknown to me Iv done this for a while with spanners on hooks for gas bottles to save the keep walking around looking for bits

I’ve done it for ever as well. It’s a hang on from engine rooms I think. It used to be common for engine specific tools to be on boards next to the engine they related to.

I think it’s brilliant but it’s not a silver bullet. Like all these things it doesn’t cure everything and it needs the good bits cherry picked.

It also suits the Japanese psyche more than the average Brit as well. People think Germans are efficient- they’ve got nothing on the Japanese I’ve met. The worst social thing you can do in japan is inconvenience others, which probably also assist with the 5S.

Yeah it was fun laying it on bitumen, I went through two electric planers leveling it out before I could use a floor sander. It feels nice to walk on.

Health, both Physical and mental play a big roll on how my workshop looks. Many moons ago Mountain Bike UK, did a feature (centre spread ) on my Co. They were so impressed with the cleanliness of our workshops they nicknamed me "Shox Dr" It had to be spotless we were rebuilding suspension units.

Move on 25yrs and it not so important, at least that's what I tell myself.

I need to do a 5C (or 5S) on the workshop. but It involves pulling everything out, cleaning and then sorting and putting everything back. That will take a couple of days on my own. The only space I have is the drive in front. If I do this, the scrotes will have a field day! The alternative, is to hire a Luton van, put everything in there, But that will cost a couple of Hundred quid.

People will stop by with money in hand thinking your having a "yard sale"....

I'm not posting photos on here as it's too embarrassing, but my shed needs a good clear-out. Unfortunately I've got another project on the go, stripped to virtually a bare shell, so that takes up too much room to do anything much. You'd think that would spur me on to get it finished.

Similar story at home, loads of stuff, small compulsion to sort through and chuck some of it out, but it has to be done.

That's not an unfamiliar state of affairs .
I normally tidy up whenever b'stard things start falling off benches, or I need to squeeze something new in.
Throwing things out is very difficult indeed.

When I was an apprentice they ripped out the entire factory wooden floor, people with wood burners never bought wood for years, replaced with crappy concrete

This flooring was laid in 1922 at wadkin. I got a van load when the place was getting demolished. I got the big oak front doors as well to save a bit of history.

I've just come to the realisation I don't have a workshop!

I have a double garage with two cars in, so chock full or car, DIY and collected tat that working on cars in there is impossible let alone projects!

I cant stand a 'busy' house, ours is clutter free, it looks like someone has nicked everything bar the TV and sofa .

If I lived in my workshop, it would be spotless. (Best not mention that to the wife, she might take me up on the offer)

I'm the opposite. I cannot abide places like that. Your home is your home. It ought reflect the character & charm living within it.

I cannot abide houses that are devoid of the evidence of someone making them a home, I don’t even feel comfortable visiting them! But each to their own it is these differences that brings interest to our lives.
