Weld On Lashing Hooks

Only thing I dislike about them is the crap that get`s stuck in there like leaves, mud etc

As they are a standard size, maybe get someone to model and 3D print a cover for them - a flat D-shape with a squashed circle projecting downwards to locate as a push fit inside the ring .

6013 is no problem vertical down. 6012 is better. Even 7018 is doable but not easy.
These outside corners I did with 6013 vertical down.

6013 fair enough, it's not ideal though. Slag entrapment is too easy on fillet joints. And I wouldn't ever recommend it for a structural purpose.
7018 is not recommended for vertical down at all. Most of the datasheets specifically state this.

Gee, that don't match with what you told me.....

6010/6011 is very rare in uk, and 6013/7018 is totally unsuitable for downhand.

I stand corrected about 6013, I still said it's not ideal. I would not use it for downhand on anything structural. It's hard enough to use uphill, as the slag is runny.

A tarp hook with that much weld length is not structural by any means.

Unfortunately it makes no difference. I find most car trailers such a pain for this. Why they can’t fit some actual lashing rings instead of rope hooks. For years you’ve never been able to use them to tie down.

On an ifor williams with the right size straps you can hook on the chassis rails. But it’s a pain as well.

Ive a flatbed nugent with sheet hooks and several steel eyes built into the design for ratchets, also the eyes in the floor.

Turn her up and run her down fast. I welded up loads of skips that way before mig was common.

Yes, same thing different terminology.
as for having to weld upward on vertical welds, if its a safety critical component then ideally you would weld upward so you can see the weld pool, if you weld downward, there is a risk that the molten metal will run down faster than the weld pool in the joint, and leave a cold junction, looks like its welded but not properly fused.
Personally i have used both.

Correct,

The bite you get using 7018's on vertical up welds adds to the strength,
6013's coming down the corner of a sheet are filling the corner to corner prep do for that purpose, I have been there and done it, the technique is hot and fast, you cant let the slag pass you, you have to beat the slag the to bottom of the weld, if not slag traps. Also used while patching silage feeder wagons many years ago.

Cheers. I thought a photo might help. The two existing hooks highlighted Red arrows. Ratchet strap on the front goes right into the corner, indeed it overlaps the weld itself. The rear is not so clever, load is pulling in a way that would open the hook if enough force applied, but it's all I have. Taking comments on board maybe I should add hooks at the front, so net can be tied down at the four corners. Then add loops or rings behind the wheel arch (Blue arrow) for tying down in conjunction with the existing forward hook.

Your not over done with factory fitted tie downs for sure.....

This is my Ifor Williams trailer, slightly smaller than yours. I fitted 4 bolted tie downs in the floor - 2.5mm chequer over 20mm ply - and fitted spreader plates on the underside. I placed them to suit tying down motorbikes but so far they’ve been fine for everything I’ve needed to carry.

your trailer will have raves/rails underneath that support the flood and make up the structure of the floor, you only need to get two of the bolts from the bracket to the rails, thats what i have done and i have used it for dumpers, diggers etc, more than strong enough for about 99% of most applications.
