What make of mig are you using ?.

I use the company Lorch Mpro 252 with 0.8 wire because of the thin metal. If I need to work on the plant or anything bigger I use my Lorch M pro with 1.0 wire. I dont bother swapping wire I just change machine

I won my machine when I had a welding bet with my boss and he lost, he stumped up the money and paid for my Lorch

We had a brand new 12 ton limited access skip lorry, the main lifting arms kept cracking. The boss said I couldnt weld it because I was not coded, so the truck went back to the main agents. I think it went back to them on 4 or so different occaisions with the same crack in the arms. It was repaired each time by a coded welder
The boss had had enough, each time it was off the road for a week and cost around £1500 to repair. He asked me if I could nurse the lifting gear (weld wise) for 8 weeks so he could organise a new lifting unit to the tune of £15k from a different supplier. I told him NO, give me the chance to weld it I said. I took the vehicle off the road one saturday morning around 06:30 am and by 17:30 that very same day I had it back together all finished. I asked him the following week if he would send a bank transfer to Matt at Lorch to pay for a new Lorch Mpro 252 that I had my eye on, I pay him the money and he transfers it by bank transfer. He said hold onto the money and if the lifting gear is NOT cracked in 8 weeks time he will BUY me the welder and it wont cost me a penny. Well over a year later the little lorry is still going strong and no signs of cracks. I saved him shelling out £15k so buying me a new Lorch was peanuts to him

I was so impressed with the Lorch that the boss also bought one for work !

Spent some more time on my FAILED metal roller (made from scrap), cut it all up and started again, had some wrong sized bearings come in as part of an order so used them up. If you're going to make one you NEED bearings or it just does not work, smooth rollers are fine if the pressing rollers run free under load, anyway its done thank God, now I can stop looking at them on RipMeOffBay

Bearing housings made on the old lathe, shafts made, roller's made and so on, one of those "little" jobs that you think will never end! And the disappointment of a days work first time round for nothing! All comes apart for service too

Then ground out after to produce a smooth radius - a requirement to meet USDA standard.

Blimey Tiggy thats a tidy job!! Makes my remake of my metal roller look shameful that I am about to post, I should have just left it alone as it worked fine but my drive roller had more play in it than a shoddy 80's pop band, the main load rollers were fine after I added bearings etc but two washers welded up and sandwiched between a flat plate just did not cut it for the up and down so another 7th bearing has been added. She has been cut up again and I've made another set of rollers (still have driver roller to make) and new load bearings and shaft, should roll some heavy gear once done and be smooth as silk to use, spent far to long on it!!!

Right Tiggy close your eyes from here on in...lol (frustrated and over heated welding don't look pretty! AND its worse once you've painted the job added some rusty galv parts and tacked up in the wind and rain)

A lots of parts to a simple "man size" roller (and used up 7 crappy old bearings)

Guide plates to add, correct bolts, few other small things and its done, 3rd time round haha

On the rare occasion that I have a good welding day, it is cringworthy to have to grind them out. The Americans dont like welds in certain places within food machines, where there is product. Sometimes I feel its overclinical, but rules are rules

Exactly that.
The back of the pusher plate (where the boss is) doesn't come into contact with any product, but I guess the rule applies as it does pass through the product contact zone. I still dont get the reasoning why they like everything to be grained though. Surely a grained surface can harbour bacteria? I would have thought a flat polished finish would be preferable.
Euro regulations are not so strict.

Wasn't today but Saturday n yesterday polished off 3 jobs just to make my life easier,

wheeled base for my trusty Sid Superjaws, now easy to move him around my workspace:



solid support stand for Billy Bender, new bit of kit bought from langy, happy to say does wot I want, you can see trial bends on the deck, there is some minor distortion of the tube because the dies are inches and the material I have is metric, but its not a problem for what I want, I was going to use some square tube and plate, but then spotted the acrow prop doing nowt-sorted. This was enjoyable cos I got to use both MIG and MMA, didn't really have to, but I like both processes.The MK 1 version I made up went into Sid Superjaws and I bent some 15mm 1.5mm wall tube no probs, but 15mm/1.5 sq tube was no go, so the version pictured is the MK3 and there is no movement now when bending sq.tube.



and last, knocked out a gate to replace the wooden one which had fallen to bits, I was thinking of doing summat more artistical, but priority was to fill t' ole, I can do summat fancier later on (yeah right ) and that one can be used on another entrance, or become a bbq. Knocking out the gate made me appreciate my welding and metalworking gear, I used to do lots of stuff in wood, the gate was done quickly, minimal dust and finishing compared to wood, and its lighter than the wood one it replaced -as in weight, and the amount of light it lets through into the lower courtyard which is below the "spray booth" where the photo is taken.

Tested out my roller, made this......not sure why and never made nothing "pointless" before, now make a stand? hang it? kick it round the garden, who knows.......... :S

I made this at the weekend:

It's a shutter release for a photobooth at my wedding in a couple of weeks - it's made entirely of scrap bits I claimed from work and an emergency cut-off switch bastardised to a camera remote. I'm quite chuffed with my handiwork for a first bash at MIG welding although it's clear to see I'm still rubbish at spraying! :-)

I also knocked up a much needed welding trolley but that in the garage and there's rain in the way.

I rectified a slight welding snafu I made on a mates sissy bar on his motorbike. It's a cut and shut job marrying a Harley back rest with the original brackets from his VN. Somehow, when I 1st assembled it I got one of the brackets back to front. They are almost identical but not quite...

Any how, re-welded it the right way round and funnily enough everything lines up now
