my olddad is 84 now. He had a mini stroke after lifting a motorbike engine out of the shed and carrying it into the garage, fortunately seemingly only temporary damage, probably hindered by the warfarin he's on. He has COPD, angina and high blood pressure probably caused by years of smoking untipped fags and working in factories. He stopped smoking in his 50s but too late to save his lungs from damage. He's now on so many pills he rattles, The side effects of some are numbness in the feet which means he can't feel the pedals when driving . The dozy old sod helped a young woman with her bag up some steps at Doncaster station a couple of years ago and ended up with sciatica and he's lost a lot of muscle tone while recovering but he's determined not to be tied to an electric buggy which he thinks will mean he'll never walk far again so we got him a wheeled walking frame with seat.

You can tell he's as frustrated as hell when he gets in my workshop, he wants to play but his body is not up to it so I set him up with a low bench with a vice so he can help out while sitting down. I must get some more photos.

Thats something that winds me right up arthur, the "old" prejudice is in the minds of the younger ones. I'm "too old" -at 66- to many of em as well. Went to fell some trees up the hill, I could see in their eyes wot they were thinking "he's a bit "old" for this aint he", I got to the top lugging chainsaw, wedges and can of juice, put the kit down and turned round to say "we'll drop this one first" -nobody, they were still half way down the hill puffing and wheezing like one of Fred Dibnahs steam engines.

Really enjoyed those photos, started out in a yard something like that. Thanks for posting em.

Great reading chaps! Funny how so many share the same feelings etc time it just slips by, then Bamm, your old... As humans it sucks to remember what was at times, many of us (if like me) stay young in our minds its the framework that slows up, I am more than young in mind, childish perhaps, especially when on two wheels haha..

The "OLD" thing is state of mind, my father when he was in his 70's used to walk anything up to 10 miles with the dog on a regular basis. He had quite a severe stroke at about 73 which paralysed him on one side. When th doctor came & rang to arrange the hospital, you could hear both sides of the call. Hello this is Dr .... I'd like to book a stroke case in please ..... Ok name, age ....... 73 ........ O geriatric case then........ No not a bl@@dy geriatric at all, very fit & had a stroke, do not put him in the geriatric ward!

He had to go to the rehabilitation day centre, he was given all the standard exercises, also making things to keep them interested, he was hated by all the old dears in there who just wanted to sit, if the physio's said do this 10 times if you can, he would do it 20. The physio held him up as an example, look at Mr ...., if he can do it you can.

He recovered most of his use, didn't walk quite as far & a bit slower, also stomped a bit when he got tired & carried on driving until he died. The Doc said it was sheer dogged determination that he got over it, so it can be done.

I reminded myself why stainless is hard work.

So did I. A 10mm round tapped mount for the heat shield broke off the mid section of the exhaust on my bike, leaving a hole. I made an absolute meal of welding it back on and adding weld to strengthen the other mounts.
I got the job done though and learned some more about TIG welding, maybe next time wont be such a task.

The final 2 of 20 bespoke 10 bucket florist stands.
All 200 of the rings were rolled up from 3X25 MSF using the Stakesys manual ring roller that I purchased a few months ago. Frames are made from 20X20X2 box and finished with Regal Paints Chocolate QAD gloss enamel over buff coloured corrosion resistant primer.

But for me, with a duff neck and arm, I am impressed.
Took a bit of time, working out new ways to do things.
Oh yes, why is my off cut bin heavy, covered in other stuff and hiding a mouse nest.

The florists stand on the right looks like it wouldn't be out of place in the leaning tower of pizza: I really ought to try harder with my photo composition, and make sure that the camera is level and that I am not standing at, or pointing the camera from a funny angle.

I welded two broken gearbox casings. One for a Citroen Traction Avant circa 1930 which is now used in a 60s formula one car.
Was originally coping with 30 BHP, now it has to live with over 200 and they are so stressed one false move and bang.
Second was a broken mounting lug on a VW Polo 1.2, not quite so interesting and a much easier fix than chasing cracks round a casting.
Oh and I had a little demo to do, and I forgot to take pictures of pretty much all of it because I was in a hurry as usual.

today i went for a weld test at an areospace complany ... 1mm butt and fillet welds on plate, and 25mm dia pipe with a will thickness of 0.7mm
