What have you welded today??

I was welding some inch and a quarter steel pipe yesterday, it's to make a money box that can't be opened for a friend.

This is an endcap on one end, I think it's cast iron or something because it welded awfully.

This it the other end of the pipe onto a flange, it welded much nicer and for the first time ever, I got that colourfulness in the weld, it's all about heat input and post gas.


This is on the bottom, a little cap welded in so you can see the pennies but never get then out.


I've got some three inch pipe to do some parallel line development tomorrow.

Thanks for that-yes yr right about dipping the tungsten and black stuff-same in my experience, think I read a post on TIG where a chap was getting soot and a couple of the guy's said it can happen -think it might be down to how clean/old the ali is but not sure.
Tempted to give ali a go with MIG.
My MIG is max 160 amps, so would 2-3mm be feasible with that?..
Guess 1mm stuff best left to TIG?

That's a job I have to do on my son's soon. Not looking forward to it, as I've not fitted one before. Looking on the LR forums the way they suggest is to cut it away leaving the top about half an inch proud of the chassis & cut the top of the outrigger to fit, this allows you just to get in from inside. is this how you did it?

That's roughly how I did the passenger side, there just isn't enough room for a mig torch between the outrigger and the footwell to do a decent job.

I put fish plates on the inside face and puddle welded, then seamed the whole lot

I would have preferred to remove the bulkhead or the engine and box to do it properly but my mate wasn't interested

Thanks for that, it's the passenger side I've got to do. I've looked at it & can see it's possible but a right sod to do a decent job without stripping the inner wing.

Money box that cant be opened? Maker I understand that one.
I made one for a friend years ago to colect money for charity in his cider cellar as I was fed up of people drinking and not contributing.
I wanted to see them angle grind the top off, but my pal enjoys gettng the funds out with a butter knife.
If I had thought I would have fitted an angled baffle plate to stop this nefarious act.

Arthur, nice work on the shovel, I have been thinking of doing something like this for a while.
And Bingo! an idea springs into mind. Have a light behind it.

I stole a fiver off him and drew on it, now he thinks he can't spend it and that I owe him a fiver so I'm collecting five pounds in shrapnel and welding it into a tube for him.

I'd also make sure there was plenty of old greasy washers in there as well, just to bulk it out a bit.....

I made one for the kids years ago out of CHS, 90mm diameter with a 6mm wall thickness complete with an anti tamper slot and a junior hacksaw as a 'key'.
They managed to save enough to buy an used Italjet 50cc scrambler between them with all the loose change the grand parents gave them over the course of about 18 months.
They have had years of enjoyment out of the bike and its now tucked at the back of the store ready for any grandchildren I may have.
The moneybox is still about as well with the base welded back on but my son is now an apprentice welder/fabricator so has access to quicker 'keys'!

Not so clear pictures but I mounted a skip body onto a chassis and welded the runners of the body to some mounts that were bolted to the side of the truck chassis.
